Still about the little boy from below. Well we have now had two group meetings about him and he is much improved, but the thing that has really got on our wick is that we have called in these people (SENCO & HV) for help we are the ones that have recognised there is a problem and he needs some help yet we are the ones that have ended up having to go and do the training! why us? we saw the problem? They are saying that all staff members need to do two lots of behaviour management training, we have been told by the area SENCO who runs it that we are already doing it all anyway but we have to have a certificate to say it. My SENCO has already completed it and repor…

Hello again I work in a special school for children with complex needs ie asd, pmld etc, and I am trying to develop PLAY for all our children both indoors and outdoors. Just wondered if anyone out there had a policy on play that they would be willing to share please. Or any help or guidance? Also we want to develop things outdoors for children in wheelchairs to play with, or have experiences on. Again any ideas would be brilliant! Thanks everyone

I am very concerrned about a child currently in my class. i have been to my SENCO but i'm afraid the attitude in our school is we will help in year 1. This young child only recognises 3 souonds and does not recognise any numbers. She is unable to touch count 5 objects accurately. She is unable to tell me the sounds in her name and at times is unable to write it. She is unable to copy words or letters. I have been giving her short games daily sometimes twice a day but nothing seems to be working. I am desperate for some ideas please!!

New Job!

I have been co-managing my preschool for 7 years now. For the last few months I have been thinking about finding myself a new challenge, and I have just accepted a job as a Portage Home visitor, working with special needs children and their parents in their homes. It will be a huge wrench to leave the preschool that I has been a large part of my life, but I feel it is the right decision. I am leaving the preschool in a very strong position with excellent staff and my very organised co-manager in charge. How about a new forum area for Portage Home visitors, Steve - are there any others out there? And then today I had confirmation that I have met all the standar…

Hi Everyone Today we had a meeting between us, the Health Visitors, mum and the SENCO and we have come up with some strategies to promote positive behaviour and also we have got him a referal to the CDC... relief it means he can get some speech therapy. Mum is still saying that he talks fine at home, but we had to point out that there are 6 staff members that work in the setting and the majority of us have many years experience of working with children and we all cant understnad him and this is not the norm. We also pointed out at 3 1/2 he should be able to string a sentence together and not be using single words on their own. I feel bad for mum cos it is her littl…

What A Week.......

We have a child in our group who has given us cause for concern since he came for an introductory visit. He started in September and we noticed that he seemed unaware of the other children around him, he had to play with the train set a certain way and got annoyed if the other children didn't do it. Also if they were too slow going round the track, he has been known to climb over them. There is also a lot of repetitive play as in drawing a circle on a white board, putting in the features and then cleaning the board. This he repeats several times. We approached mum in January and asked if they would give permission for us to contact the Early Years Support Team. Initial…

Further to my topic below. we have hit a wall with the little boy that we are worried about. According to mum the HV came out last week to vist them and said that she didn't think there was a problem with the child's speech she thought he was shy!!! Now the last thing in the world is this little boy being shy, he comes to us for cuddles he screams to get his own way and he has known us for over a year. We have a meeting with all agencies after half term and from our point of view we are going to say that we have voiced our concerns and when he gets to school and the same thing comes up again we have documented our concerns and they were not listened to. It is s…

Individual Education Plans
by Guest- 3 replies

Hello. I am once again calling on your help for my FD but this time, I am looking for an example of an Individual Education Plan to include in my Parents/Carers module as work are being awful as usual and not allowing me to copy one to put in. I was wondering if someone had an example of an IEP they use in their settings and if you would be willing to share it, so as I may include it in my appendices of my assignment. Obviously I would prefer one without the name of your setting on, so I'm really only looking for a rough guide. If you would be willing and able to help, I would be so grateful. Thanks in advance! we have a little boy who is just 4 and is off to school in september, our concerns are: he will not speak to any of the children in the nursery he will play alone 90% of the day the other 10% is he will just run around and likes to get 'silly' but there is still no commuication he will move himself away at times from children he will talk a little to staff he will talk a lot to mum/dad he will engage in activities it is hard to get his attention , we have to get right down and make good eye contact and repeat a task more then once - hearing is fine. we have spoke to mum/dad and have made detailed observation we have had ongoing small group sessions …
