I need some advice on how to prepare for a child who may be joining our group after christmas. This child is 3.2 years has no speech and is still in nappies. The parents have already secured funding for a 1:1 worker and are not starting the child with us until after christmas due to a house move.In fact they are looking at a couple of settings, but i think we may be the one they ultimately choose because we are smaller and have a more "homely" feel.Apparantly, this child becomes quite frustrated due to the lack of speech and therefore the difficulties of being understood, though is not aggressive.I asked if they use Pecs cards with the child and apparantly, they are just st…

Pre-requisite Skills For Reading
by Guest- 5 replies

Hi Does anyone know of any sort of checklist or assessment which breaks down the pre-requisite skills (i.e. visual discrimination/memory skills, auditory discrimination/memory skills etc) needed before children can learn to read? I work with children with complex learning, physical and communication needs so am looking for something which identifies these skills in small steps.

My SENCO attended a course yesterday, run by our Early Years Support Service. As part of it, the delegates were advised to order a copy of a CD called 'Implementing the Disability Discrimination Act in Schools & Early Years SEttings' DFES 0160 2006. She thought it looked excellent, came back all enthused, logged on to teacher net, tried to order it: it came up with a 'you are not allowed' type message. Thinking it was because she was at home, she asked me to try at work, which I did, with exactly the same result. I telephoned then, to be told that it was only available to schools and that the only way I can get one is if the EYSS send me a letter of authorisation, whi…

I have a mixed R/Y1 class which includes 3 boys with quite delayed langugae development and social development. 2 have statements and 1 is undergoing statutory assessment at the moment. They are all Y1, though one of the boys is an August birthday and we have all agreed for him to be educated a year below, to give him more of a chance to slot in with his peers. This boy is the one whose statement gives him 15 hours of support and lunchtime support. Fortunately we will be able to use this support for the 3 boys, as they have similar needs and arein the same class- they need to play and talk.! When they were assessed they were all around P2-3. Is there anyone in mainst…

by Guest- 15 replies

Hi all As some of you may already know the pre-school i opened has just completed its first twelve months so we find ourselves coming across new situations all the time (as many of you that have been open for ages probably still do ) We had a family join us towards the end of last term. Two boys (and one girl, who has just started today.) When the two boys started dad came to visit and filled in all the forms. (it's obvious, in the nicest possible way, that there are SEN with the parents) The eldest boy has left us now to start school, so we have the brother aged 3 and his sister, aged 2. The boy is really keen to join in and responds to adults and ca…
