Children With Profound Needs

Hi, I am currently training in a school which has recently changed its designation to accept children with profound and complex needs. I am currently teaching in a class of 9 -all of whom have quite severe autism which I have had training and experience of dealing with (in the sense of providing a curriculum that they can access) I have just got the job for next year in the same class (having beaten the class teacher at the mo who was only on a temp contract - but thats another thread!!) and I have been told that it is a difficult class next year - going to be taking three children in wheelchairs, a couple more children with autism and 2 children with downs. Just wr…

Dyspraxia

Has anyone any experience of dyspraxia? I have a 5 year old who is very bright - will read anything etc but rushes everywhere spills his dinner doesn`t like to go on 2 wheeler because he says he can`t ride it, writing is chronic but pencil control is good. His pencil can`t keep up with his brain and consequently he doesn`t like writing. I don`t know if he is a typical boy or there is something not quite right. SEN co-ord mentioned dyspraxia and that I spoke to mum. I don`t want to jump in with 2 feet so I thought I would discuss pencil control with mum and give him some exercises. I know he walked early etc and that some dyspraxic children do things later. He is so compet…

Tap, Tap Box

I have been advised to create one of these for an autistic child in our group. When i asked what this was, it never got explained to me fully. Does anyone know what it is and how to use this game? From what i understand several favorite toys are shown to the child and are then put in a clear lidded box. The child has to tap the box as a means of communicating with the adult that they would like to play with a toy in the box. Have a got this right or am i completely barking up the wrong tree!!!!??? Thanx Ask

Iep's
by Guest- 7 replies

I would like to know whether IEP's are over and above classroom practise- I have recently had a discussion with senco about the IEP's for my sen children. I think the targets set for them are too difficult, the targets are the same for all 6 of them, and don't reflect profile or early learning goals. I was told the IEP was over and above the work I did in the classroom, and were for her when she did her 1 hour session each week. I really am bothered by this as we are currently being monitored by HMI. Does anybody have any ideas or know where i can look on the web?

Opportunity Groups

I've come across the term 'Opportunity Groups' and wondered exactly what they are how they work in Early Years, particularly in relation to autism. All information about their organisation, and how successful they are would be most welcome.

Hi RUTH, I didn't know how to get this to you through PM, so here it is. It dates from 2003 but I don't think anything has changed. I must admit I've recently used the document ( without the logo) and put on a new heading, INFORMATION SHARING BETWEEN AGENCIES. This is so that I can ask other agencies who are working with a child who starts next week to use it to pass on information to my SENCO. Peggy SEN_Transitional_Report_Form_2003.rtf

I wonder if anyone would mind sharing with me their numeracy/literacy planning for a sen foundation class. I currently work with reception/ year 1 sld/pmld children working up to P4/5 and am curious how other people plan their lessons. For example do you plan 3 part numeracy/literacy hours? Or are your lessons more play based as is appropriate for these children?

Identifying Ch In Reception
by Guest- 7 replies
- 1.7k views
Just wondering if anyone can help. I havea few children in my class with speech difficulties, poor sound recognition and severe independence issues. We have had the IEP reviews with our SEN co-ordinator. These children were discussed with the SEN co-ordinator and she said we will see how it goes and wait until year 1 until we do anything. This really worries me as i sort of think what is the point in identifying the problem surely we are wasting a year - could we not be doing something about his now. I have only been in reception for a year so not sure if this is normal practice. What happens else where? Lola

Area Senco's

This is an enquiry for private and voluntary settings. Do you all have an area SENCO? Do you know who that person is? Do they come out to visit you and if so how often? Do they come out on a regular basis or just if you request it? What sort of support do they give you? Thanks Linda
