Hi all I'm working as a nursery SENCo and am trying to help some specific children to manage their behaviour. Two of the boys in working with are very bright and intelligent, really ready for school and the extra stimulus that schools provide, but they have 'silly' times. It's almost as tthough they know how to be good, but they want to push their luck without really realising! They can listen and follow instructions, but most of the time this seems to be struggle as they roll around smiling and laughing. The pre-school room now has a good routine, the structured activities are broken up each session to prevent boredem, we have a time line up in the room, us…

Help! I've just started a new job working as a focus worker for 6 children who have behaviour problems. Most of them seem to be fairly straight forward - needing consistency and sensible disipline of their behaviour, but two of the boys in my group seem to fit with ADHD. As you are all so brilliant, does anyone know where i should go next, who i can contact about furthur information and when i should be really concerned about them. Feel a bit lost at the moment. The two boys are quite agressive, do not like making eye contact, swear or use unappropriate language, do not seem to understand when they are being told off and 'time out' does not seem to having th…

English As A Second Language
by Guest- 13 replies

Hello, I am in a dilemma . Would you call a child with English as a second language a special educational need? Our SENCo has left the setting without going through our SEN children, and she has entered this child as a SEN to identify their language. Can anyone give me ideas on what to do. There was a home-school book started with A4 pictures on it (four at last look - train, chair, doll and bed??!!?) and it went home with parent but has since been "Lost". !! The first language is Polish. The child is now repeating words when they are said to them and recalling simple repetative words i.e. at snack time - please, thank you, apple, water so they are starting. Bu…

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help me with my problem. I have a EAL child starting in my class in September (Reception). He does know some english, however he is very reluctant to talk and only uses gesture on rare occasions. He was receiving some support once a week whilst in Nursery, however that person has now retired. Im not really sure where to start with him. Any ideas would be very gratefully received.

Ok, so I couldn't really put this inthe Reception/Year one section or the nursery one, as my kids are actually juniors, but working between P2 and P6. Houses and Homes is my topic after Christmas and I'm trying to think of what to do. Any great ideas folks? My science topic I have to cover is electricity too. We're going to set up a house role play area in what is currently a dark room. Thanks guys!
