I Need Help!

I have a child in my class who has cerebal palsy. She has a splint and to be honest her condition does not stop her doing anything. The major problem I have is her behaviour. She cannot interact with any of the other children. She cannot sit on the carpet and if she is not getting attention from myself or TA she will scream )serverly high pitched), throw things, hit, kick others. If I remove her from any situation she hits me. She has thrown scissors at me (hitting me between the eyes) she has kicked me and recently, while talking to her calmly and at her level, she head butted me! She is unable to share with other children and responds to nothing. Due to…

Hi Girls and Guys. I know I have posted in the past about S&L coourses. However I'm just wondering how may of you out there are in the same boat. On friday last week I had a teacher training day for support staff, which entailed courses available. Now I know every area is different, but I just wonder we have a NVQ for teaching assistant, with a small unit on special needs and we have the NVQ 3 again the special needs is optional. (Ibe recently been told I cant do this unit because I'm not in a special school) so the point of my NVQ is.... Would any of you be interested in doing say an NVQ for a general special needs or a specific i.e autism or speech and lang…

New Topic- Decorations
by Guest- 2 replies

Decorations is my topic for my Y3/4 SLD/PMLD class. I think it sounds like a good topic with plenty of scope for stuff, but as I've sat down to think about it, my mind has gone blank. Any ideas anyone? I know you lot are great at this kind of thing. I'm kind of annoyed that Bonfire Night, Eid and Divali are all in the 1st week back after half term but there we go, that's just the way it is!

Hitting - Any Ideas?
by Guest- 2 replies

We have a Downs Syndrome child in our main stream foundation class who constantly hits other children. We know the reasons why he does it - partly frustration at not being able to communicate, partly to communicate he doesn't want other children around him and partly to get attention. He is almost 5 but is a 12-18 month old developmentally. His comprehension is limited and he doesn't comprehend feelings, he doesn't respond to praise or differences in tone of voice. When he hits he often hits the children who are likely to cry or make a fuss. If you say 'nicely, gently, say hello etc' he will stroke the other child two or three times before hitting them again. He mainly …

Ok, so I'm a musician, have been since the age of 7, but I've just been told as I walked out of the door today that I'm going to become music co-ordinator in my new school (SLD/PMLD for those that don't know!) Does anyone know of anything good I can use to help make a scheme or even a scheme designed for SEN?! The kids get half a term each term with a team called Music Unlimited, but I need something for them to do when they aren't getting that. Any ideas anyone?! HELP!

Hi I am currently working 25 hours at present. 15 hours in year one 10 year 6 with statemented children for speech and language. Another year 6 child is about to get a statement in the same class that I work. Am I allowed to work with her alongside the other year 6 or would someone new have to brought in. I have recently been supporting her as she sits on the same table. Its just 25 hours dont include lunch, but I would like to continue helping her. Is it up to the LEA or headteacher who supports the statement. Anyone any clues.... Mandi

i look after a child with a statement. Speech and language, dont know if you read the posts back in june but I have tried everywhere to get started on a qualification on this. With no joy.. The child I work with seems to make progress one day and fall the next. He has just in school began to speak voluntary without prompting. But i fee he is depending to much on me. He expects me to put his coat on his peg, but letters in his bag of which he is capable of. I struggle to get his attention on a one to one basis. I have done jolly phonics three times with him and we are still struggling. He is very stubborn and I have to keep being wuite firm with him. Mum says shes glad…
