Sen Statements

Hi Just wondering whether anyone else is finding that full time statemented hours are hard to get. We have a downs child just started who has been given 25 hours - we requested 30 to cover luch times as well as class times. We were told we were lucky to get 25 hours and to be 'creative' with our cover. This child needs constant supervision (developmentally about 18 months) he is spoon fed, in nappies, hits, bites, kicks other children at the drop of a hat, not to mention escaping. This is in a foundation class of a mainstream primary school. Also our school had to apply for the statement and say why we needed the hours (how does that work when we hardly know the chi…

I have a child just about to start in my Reception class, she did attend our nursery, who has CP. She has no speech problems. She has serious temper tantrums and screams very loudly if she does not get her own way, she will lash out and throw things. She does respond to cuddles rather than confrontation but I just wondered whether there is anyone else out there who has experience to share.

Sen Ideas

Hi I work in a mainstream primary as a SEN TA - In Sept I will be having a new boy aged almost 5 with Downs Syndrome who is at an 18month level. He is non-verbal apart from a couple of sounds and can use approx 10 signs although he is reluctant to use signs and I have never seen him do any independant signing on the six visits he has attended unless I or someone else does the sign for him first. He tends to hit, poke and pull other children, destroy everything in sight and escapes at an incredible speed! (He sees it as a game I think) What I was wondering was does anyone have any bright ideas on how to help him integrate with the rest of the class and follow the curri…

I am attending a meeting at a local nursery school to discuss the best way forward for a September starter in Reception. The child in question was a premature birth and has a number of difficulties including hearing problems, visual problems, general immaturity etc. She will be 4 at the end of August. Parents want entry to school to be deferred until September 2006. Has anyone come across this situation before? Comments gratefully received!

Questions To Ask Interviewee For Sen Post
by Guest LucyQ- 1 reply

Hello Just wondering if any of you have any suggestions about what questions I should be asking an interviewee re new SEN post. I have interviewed before but this is a more specific role (our SENCO is busy!!). The post is to support a new child who has Autism (we have funding to cover the post). I was wondering how much info I can tell her about the child, bearing in mind she really is just about the only candidate and on paper seems perfect for the job - we are in a small town. Thanks Lucy

Special Needs Pmld

I run an assesssment nursery in a special school. The children come into the nursery at age 2 years to be assessed by myself and a team of health professionsals, which ensures that they are placed in the school which is most appropriate for their needs. The numbers and type of client change, and can range from MLD, SLD to PMLD. We also have children on the autistic specturm as well as those with syndromes etc. The foundation stage is very new, and it has tried hard with the footsteps to show progression as the child develops. Unfortunately, most of the children I work with are well below the first footstep and are working within the p levels. Planning for t…
