Not quite sure why I have chosen to write abou children with EAL for a uni assignment but I have and now I am a bit stuck!!! I have no children with english as an additional or second language in my pre-school and hope that some of you might!! For part of my assignment I have to show some of the processes that marginalise them and evaluate schemes intended to promote their inclusion. The latter is not a problem I have loads of info. However, "processes" that can leave these children at the margins of educational life is proving a stumbling block. I know it's quiet at the moment but any ideas would be very welcome

Having had the first set of our induction meetings for our new intake next year, we have a little boy coming to us with allbinisn. We do already have the support of VTS, but I dont have experienec of this condition. We know that he cant see a great deal, other than shadows, and that he wears sunglasses all the time, and rarely goes outside, but I wondered if any members have direct experience of the sort of issues we are likley to face meeting his needs. Thanks. I want to make sure that we start the ball rolling for any additional equipment or adaptations we may need.

I am suffering from brain fade tonight (well that's my excuse!) and wonder if any of you clever people can tell me the name of the pictures that are used to support children with SEN. I am talking about the ones that illustrate nursery routine, washing hands, home time, snack time etc. The child/adult communicate with thes pictures and the child puts the relevant picture in a pocket on th wall. I am sure they have a name but can't think and want to try and find some on-line. Hope someone can stop me from going totally mad!!!!!!

Anxious

hello I am due to receive a little boy with cerebal palsy in sepetember and am very anxious as to how to intergrate him into my reception class. I want to be positive about him being in mainstream but have had no experience of any disability in my class before. He is walking, mostly with a frame but also with support on shoulders. My main concern is he has no speech, only some hand gestures. How can I give him the support he needs? He will have a statement but we are yet to appoint the LSA. How can I assess him, how will he be able to do PE? Stupid questions maybe sorry. Can anyone give me any tips, books to read, websites, support networks? I want him to have…

I have a 4 year old child at pre-school that I think may have this disorder. Very obsessional about certain things e.g. pulling up socks, fussing over clothing, lunch box has to be put certain way up. We are trying to develop her concentration skills it has been hard work but she is improving although she always has to touch and fiddle with the person sitting next to her. She very often wets herself in the toilet area I do wonder if she is delaying using the toilet because she spend so long adjusting her clothing after. We offer to help her but she gets very frustrated because we are not doing it correctly. I had a word with her mum today and she is at her wits end knowi…

Hi Forms for financial support for SENCOs in supporting the transition of children with SEN into school, are available through your Area SENCO. I have just recieved a form to fill in for supply cover for meetings held with the school that children with SEN from our group will be attending in September. It is a one off payment of £20.00. Checklists, As A Starting Point.....

Hi! This is something I have meant to investigate for some time but typically have only found time to do so in the holidays! I wanted to see if anyone has any checklists for helping SENCO's in groups, keyworkers etc fine tune their thinking. I was thinking that often we have a gut reaction that all is not well but can't always put our finger on the problem. I have one list for helping with issues around hearing which asks questions like: does child often say ‘eh’ or ‘what’ Does child often do or say the wrong things Shows signs of frustration or apparent disobedience Sometimes give you non-sensical answers to questions Ask for things to be repeated Having di…

I work for the Learning and Behaviour Service. I am suppossed to support children in mainstream settings in nurseries and up to the end of reception for no longer than 6 weeks. I worked with an asd pupil for 18 months visiting him everyday. At first he would only work on his own agenda and was very tactile defensive. He would not even hold a pencil. I was luckly enough to be invited , after many telephones calls, to observe him working within a speech and language group at the hospital. I used some of the strategies that they used and used alot of my own. After the 18 months the pupil is now in mainstream school with a little support. So with alot of hard work and…
