Language Difficulties

Hi, I recently attended a SENCO conference and one of the speakers was talking about pictures that are available to put up around the nursery and use as aids. They were pictures of ears for ' good listening' eyes for 'good looking' very simple pictures. Im sure they were called 'widgets' but cant find where I can get them from... I did think of making my own, but as most of you know Day Nurseries are busy places! Can anyone help me find where to get them from?

How do we start writing an IEP for a 2.5 year old who has no detectable communication skills? He doesn't respond to his name, and it's difficult to get eye contact.

Identifying Special Needs In Nursery

Hi. We have a child in Nursery who has been with us since September and will be moving up into Reception this year. His behaviour is, for want of a better word, bizarre. He had very little conversation when he first came into Nursery, although Mum insisted that he was a clear speaker at home, and although we have noticed an improvement in this respect, his behaviour is still odd and like nothing I have come across before. We have made detailed observations of him and have identified certain patterns of behaviour, which we have discussed with Mum, but she doesn't appear to be especially concerned at this stage. Based on these observations, we are putting him onto EYA…

Speech And Language

I work within the Early Years Team of the Learning and Behaviour Service. I support children within Nursery and Mainstream School settings up to the end of Reception. I am finding more and more children with speech and language problems and wondered if anyone else had noticed this increase. There also seems to be less and less support for these pupils with mainstream school with speech and language problems. I would be grateful of your comments.

Selective Mutism

Any suggestions for working effectively with children who are reluctant speakers (possibly just extremely shy), would be very welcome. I already know that its important to not apply pressure to speak, and that children need to feel confident and secure to speak in nursery/playgroup, but I have heard that it could be hifding a speech or language disorder so when should I start to worry, and is there anything I con do to prevent it becoming an issue.

We have just gone through the statementing process for a child with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, and our nursery has been named on the statement. Prior to this, we were receiving funding to help pay for a learning support assistant to work with this little boy. I have been told by the early years service that this funding will not now come from them as the child has had a statement issued. The LEA don't seem to be able to respond to my questions about where the funding will now come from. Has anybody been through the statementing process and can shed light on this?
