Hi I have a 4yr old boy who attends the setting he punches/rubs(aggressively) his head at times during the session, such times are registration, storytime, well anytime we sit really. He has a poor diet - only eats white processed carb, chocolate and sweets. No fruit, protien, milk etc. He is very 'angry' and frowns when asked to do something ie tidy up. He loves play fighting and is constantly irritating the other children by wrestling them when they are playing. He is bright, can can argue the hind legs off a donkey! Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Hi all, We have a 3 year old who has autism (as i was told when i joined). But after speaking to his key worker and the manager i've learnt that he hasn't been given a formal diagnosis yet as they are still "doing tests" and they are taking forever. He has had a speech therapist visit and an occupational therapist was supposed to come and observe him but they didn't show up. Our area SENCO advises us regarding his IEP's, I feel really stumped. What else can we/I do to help this child? I am an EYT trainee and part of my role is to understand how certain factors can inhibit children's learning &development and also to support children with special needs, but if we…

not sure if this is the right area to post but I am after a simple and short exercise to get parents participating at a meeting I am holding in a couple of weeks. we have had an increasing amount of phone calls from parents who are less than happy that we have children with special needs at our setting I have been advised to hold a meeting to outline our inclusion and behavior management policies and how we support all children in the setting. I would love to have an exercise or short activity I can use to high light inclusion and diversity...I am sure years ago I did an ice breaker at a training course but I cannot remember what the whole thing was other than we had t…

Hi all, we have a child in our early years setting with suspected sen although she is going through various tests and referrals, she has no diagnosis. It is very early days for the family. She needs to be monitored at all times for the safety of other children which obviously impacts on staffing levels. Although we feel we are making some progress behaviour wise, we are very aware that the other children have picked out that she is different (and you know how tales go home with them) so we are concerned that The family does not end up alienated and labelled (through the children's tales to parents) The children in the setting deal with the fact that we do need to treat …

We have a lovely child, who was doing well with us. He started attending an Opportunity group in November, in theory to help with his speech and language. he is still awaiting a formal diagnosis, but everyone is agreed that he appears to be on the Autistic spectrum. Now, here is the problem : since he has been attending the other group, his behaviour has become extremely disruptive and aggressive. He constantly snatches and grabs things form other children and screams and flaps his hands if other children try to play with things that are intended to be for a group times.Today we had to physically prevent him throttling a child who had a toy that he wanted! We had worked …

Hello all, This is my first post here. My name is Usma and i am a EYTS trainee. Really enjoying it so far. Are there any other EYTS trainee's on here? I am planning an activity with the Preschoolers (3-5 years) on acceptable behaviour inside the nursery as there is alot of running, standing on chairs and shouting. I plan on doing this through a circle time activity where the children and I discuss how we think we should behave when indoors. I then plan to write the "rules" up on a display board with pictures of children demonstrating the positive behaviours. There is a child who has autism (not sure how severe). As part of my training i need to show ho…

A friend has shared this with me and I thought I'd pop the link on here for peeps to look at. Always useful to have a few hints as to what is going on. The missing girls with ASD etc seems to be a focus of concern at the moment we seem to be much better at picking up boys with this type of condition http://taniaannmarshall.wordpress.com/2013/06/22/first-signs-of-asperger-syndrome-in-young-girls-pre-school/
