Hi I hope its ok to ask... I am still studying and would be grateful if you could spare a minute to share your experiences as I am about to do a project about the inclusion of children with special educational needs in mainstream school. This could include any level of additional needs. Did it work for the child, the school, the rest of the class? Was it a positive or negative experience? What extra support was needed? Was it actually the best thing for the child? These sorts of things. Personally my experiences of this are limited but I have to say what I have seen hasn't been too positive and the additional staff were seen as an extra pair of hands …

Had to attend my first ever DISM today. All going well, and I gave my views about the child concerned. It has been recommended that the child attends a few sessions at the local opportunity group, in addition to my setting. All was well really, until they asked for the father's opinion. He went very quiet, then said, 'yes, I am pleased that he can come to the opportunity group, but I have to say that i want to thank X (my setting) for giving me back my son'...........silence. Total utter silence. I looked at him, he looked at me, then he said.....' She ( me) has given me back my son. I don't live with him and when I do see him, I see wonderful differences every time. She …

Sharing strategies
by Guest Spiral- 4 replies

Hi there, we have a child who is in the process of being referred. They are high functioning (can count to 100 and backwards from 100), but cannot understand the concept of sharing. For example, they wish to play with all of the cars and line them up but if another child tries to take a car they cry incessantly. Communication is very limited and we are using signs and symbols (although they can speak to say a number or colour). Does anyone have a sharing strategy that may help? Thank you, Spiral

We have a very sensory driven child at our setting, we had a vistit today from the educational specalist and she has recommended we aquire some impact play and cause and effect play toys..... the child has repeatative movement behaviour and his schema is scattering and throwing which makes managing his play a challenge. she said marble run and other resources that show cause and effect would be usefull to support this type of play. I am his key person and am not a senco, so I am hoping that someone here with senco experience can recommend more resourses, i can borrow from the local toy library . many thanks x

Having seen our inclusion teacher this morning, she has told me that the new development matters is now available for use with our SEND children. Each area is now broken down into much more manageable bands for use with our SEN children. Every setting will be getting a hard copy, but in the meantime i am desperate to start using this document but cannot find it online anywhere ........... . Does anyone know what i am talking about and can anyone provide me with a link before my mind explodes !!!

Hello, does anyone know what Teacher Oversight and Additional Inclusion Support Means ? We have had a letter to say that a child will be eligible for this from Jan. Does it mean we will get someone into the setting to assist us, or is it money to enable us to provide extra staff cover?. Will phone our inclusion teacher on Monday, but was interested to find out what it means before then

Hi Does anyone have any strategies/ideas for a child (4.4 yrs) who is becoming increasingly disruptive and demanding attention through being disruptive/laughing at us, destroying toys/ equipment. We have tried a range of tactics but mainly struggle with the laughing at us and being disruptive to gain attention. Parents are really supportive and have the same difficulties at home

Hi Hi. We have a couple of children who have an IEP and currently I give a copy to parents/other professionals and store a copy in the child’s personal file. I was just wondering if we should put a copy in the child’s learning journey or not? Thanks
