Quick poll - What is your company sick pay policy? We currently only pay SSP but we're considering doing more. Thanks!

Hi all Does anyone know whether it is possible to buy a house, and run a preschool from it, rather than renting a church hall type building. Also would you be able to live in the house. For example, have downstairs as a preschool and live upstairs. Would it be a business mortgage you would have to get? Sorry for all the questions, look forward to some advice. Thanks

Interview process
by Guest- 12 replies

Our staff team have recently suggested that interviews should include potential staff spending a day in the nursery as a way both to give them the opportunity to see if they like us, and for us to see how they interact with children. I can see that this would be an ideal but am concerned about the practicalities of this, and I also think a whole day is too long to expect someone to give. At the moment our candidates all have to tell a story or lead an activity, observed by a senior member of staff who reports to the interviewing panel. I wonder if any of you do something like this, and how you organize it - particularly how you make sure all candidates are given a fair…

I'm looking at changing the way I charge to help me to recoup some of the money I lose due to 3/4 yr old funding. (funding pays £3.80 per hour, but my costs are £4.15 per hour) If you wouldn't mind me being nosy, can you please tell me what you charge and how (ie: by the hour, the sessions, the day, the week, separately for food) and also the area you're in. Thanks for any responses - gratefully received!

Hi there, I had a rather confusing conversation with someone about the DBS checks, hence my question; Do committee members need a DBS check as well as an EY2? Thank you, Spiral ;-)

Hi all After a bit of information/advice. I am manager of a committee led pre-school. We are a small rural setting employing only 5 staff. The committee have recently started investigating what our insurance covers us for and where the trustees would stand if a legal claim was made against us. Have any you ever had any problems with claims being made against you with regards to Health and Safety/ Risk assessments should a child have an accident. We think we have everything covered but were just worried that insurance might not cover us in these sort of incidents. Thank you

QTS - Observations
by Guest colechin- 3 replies

A member of staff is currently on her QTS training course and I have just filmed an activity she has done with the children. I have been informed that I now need to write the observation up using impact statements. I'm not sure what these impact statements are. I'm sure someone out there has been through this process and I was wondering if you could help me. I feel that I may need to go in to more detail in the written observation than I would when we do our peer on peer observations. Is anyone able to send me prompters or guidance on how I should be writing up observations for the university? If anyone has some samples that would be great. The observation was …

Hi all Apologies in advance for the long post. We have a child who has been with us 12 months, he turned 3 in October. For a while now we have noticed his behaviour, concentration, social skills are getting worse. Other children are even saying that they don't want to play with him as he hurts them (of course we deal with this by saying he doesn't mean to and we have to try and help him etc.) Other parents comment on the mess he makes in the room as they are arriving (he swipes tables clear, throws and kicks toys around). So 2 weeks ago I had a chat with mum about our concerns and getting our area senco in. Mum agreed that this behaviour also occurs at home and that he…
