Hi, Does any setting have a way of monitoring staff observation amounts. Currently we ask that staff complete a min of 5 observations per key child for each month, as we use the system Tapestry. However I am finding that staff are rushing to complete observations as the end of end month, and when I log on online some staff are completing no more than two/one per week. Management have told staff several times that observations need to be spread out across the month, however they are clearly not doing so..... I was thinking of doing a weekly monitor sheet with my deputy, and if staff haven't done a certain amount within that week, they will need to stay …

Can any of you tell me how you are managing your 30 hour spaces (if you offer them)...we are struggling a bit as we don't hold spaces but are now being forced in to this because people are booking 3 unfunded sessions to start then wanting to up to 10 funded sessions when their 30 hours kicks in....esentially we are then holding those 7 session for a term...or even 2 terms Anyone got any wise words (other than don't do 30 hours!!)

Does anyone have a nursery dog? I'm thinking of getting a new family dog and would like to be able to take it into work with me rather than leaving it at home alone all day. thought it could sit in the office with me but occasionally see the children and they could learn a bit about care etc. I realise I would need a risk assessment and to make sure no children had allergies etc but wondered if anyone had one and how did parents react? have you come across any problems? Thanks

Hi All, Just looking for some advice. My setting has started offering free flow play between inside and outside. We are reviewing our practices right now and I am wondering if there are any tried and tested ways in which you can keep track of how many children are in an area at any one time? (Bar getting them to stay still and counting them!) How often do you do head counts of children and are they mainly done when children are moving from one area of the building to another plus at arrival and departure times? Does anyone have any fun ways to head count the children that involves them more? If the children are using two separate areas how do you …

OMG feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Spent the last few meetings asking people to put lids on pens, tidy shelves, keep the shed from looking like a bike explosion has gone off etc etc. Then as usual I have spent last week tidying in the shed an hour in the workstation blah blah blah yesterday morning sheds all junked up again workshop baskets crammed with bits of paper that been used on both sides it’s endless. Last straw came yesterday when I came down at lunchtime to find expensive wooden track been drawn all over all dumped in the middle of the builder’s tray with the pens still with lids off (!) no one had attempted to tidy it up or talked to the kids about it...…

The Guardian have published an interesting piece of research today regarding the number of men currently employed within the early years sector. You can read the article here
