We are currently working on the provision within our setting aiming to improve everything - the environment, the materials and resources and the way they are displayed. I have experienced only good and outstanding settings with practitioners who have a similar vision to me. Unfortunately I am working with a staff team who have not experienced working in a setting with someone inspiring them and it seems they do not understand what I am talking about (this includes my room leaders). We had a great visit from our Early Years Advisory Teacher today who has really given me some ideas on how to show them and now I want to get some more information from you . I am looking fo…

So if a practitioner has QTS (primary schoolteacher) but not a level 3 in childcare, they can still be in charge in a managerial role? Having a silly moment ?

Hi all quick question we have always down 24 hours of CPD a year as I thought this was statutory. Someone on my committee has said after speaking to the PLA it is only statutory to do 15 hours but best practice to do 20 hours a year. I have searched standards but actually new set says it should be done but not how many hours it should be. Can anyone help with whether I am right or not and where it is written down??

Have posted in this section as I would like a manegers view Inviting or accepting parents or carers whilst children in the setting is a real no no for me. But this is really difficult to enforce unless you adopt stalker like tendencies So what does your policy say and if it says no then how do you enforce. Mine says strongly advice' not too' but would like to say' must not ' Thoughts please thank you guys xx

I am the owner/manager of a nursery and just in the process of amending our policies around staff befriending parents after a situation occurred yesterday..... Basically 2 of my staff members befriended a parent whose child used to attend our setting around 6 months ago. I found out that they had been meeting up outside nursery and wasn't particularly pleased about it. They are also friends with her on Facebook. I reminded then several times about our policy surrounding social networking and about confidentiality and professional lines being blurred. But didn't go as far as to enforce any specific RULES about friendships outside of nursery. Now I am regretting it.....…

Bank staff DBS

We are hoping to get more bank staff to use when needed, for example if staff member ill or on course etc. I have parent on committee of our preschool which is situated next to a primary school where the parent works as a teacher. They have had their committee DBS and will have a DBS for the primary school so could they work as bank staff with us without another enhanced DBS? I'm getting a little confused with all the rules!

Now there're a title for you!! Any thoughts to help me think this through? Who decides or how is it decided which phrases are acceptable and which are not? My staff and I have had discussions previously about 'loo' versus 'toilet' - I prefer the latter.... We now have a new member of staff who tells everyone, including the children that she's going for a pee. I've asked her to use alternative phrases and she was a bit embarassed but ok with it. Then today a child asked me if I was going for a pee.... personally, I don't like this, and co-incidentally both the children and the staff member come from Poland - so is it a cultural phrase? is it ok to say…

I have received an email from a parent containing the latest newsletter from TOXBASE, hopefully i have attached it below. It is raising concerns regarding the levels of salt added to homemade playdough and quotes the recipe we currently use. I have always been under the impression that the added salt was purely to deter the children from eating it, so assume if i removed it the consistency wouldnt change. Could you all let me know your thoughts and the recipes you are using so i can change what we are doing. Thanks in advance TUU Aug 14.pdf

Hello lovelies I'm just wondering if any of you are Ofsted inspectors? I've got a couple of questions, I've called Ofsted but they have told me they can't advise me, I've checked with my LA but they tell me it depends on the individual inspector so I'm a tad  if any Ofsted inspectors are out there I would really appreciate some advice Thank you x
