Manager having operation - worried
by Guest- 9 replies

Hi everyone I'm manager of a preschool and am having to have an operation in November and I'm worried about being off for 10 weeks. We are due Ofsted and I would like to be there for the inspection and my deputy is nervous about taking on the responsibility. If I contact Ofsted and explain my situation, would they take this into account or not? She also doesn't want to work a full week and so I'm therefore wondering whether I should put another member of staff into an Acting Manager role instead. Anyone else had experience of this situation, having to be off work a long time or worked in a setting where the Manager was off?

Manager on site at all times

Hello everyone, this is my first ever post !! The owner of the Nursery I am Manager of (who pops in twice a year if we are lucky and has no childcare background) has told myself or the deputy to be at the Nursery from 7.15am until 6.30pm every day as she wants a Manager on site at all times. The Deputy has a child at school so can only do 9.00 till 5.00pm which means I have to do the full 7.15 till 6.30 5 days a week!! And heaven forbid I should want a holiday or a day off!! Any way I just wanted to know if anyone has any documentation or anything to say that a Manager doesn't need to be on the premises from when it opens to when it closes and that as long as there i…

Hi there seems to be some confusion at work about what to record. I could'nt find anything concrete to say what we should record. Ie if a child trips and has a small graze, do you record that. Obviously anything that's required treatment ie cuts, head injuries ECt goes in but what about the small stuff ?

I might have got this all wrong but I thought that Ofsted did my crb (as it was then) 8 years ago when I became manager at my setting, I am also the registered person now. Now I am in the process of renewing all the staff disclosures as the committee want them renewed every 8 years. BUT Ofsted haven't requested that I renew mine and my setting can't do it as the capita online account is my sign on / name on it. So I'm checking everyone else's and mine hasn't been done for 8 years????

Tribunals

Hi I am deputy manager at nursery. Its a family business, run by my mum for the last 24 years. We have 14 employees contracted to work for us. In all her time there she is lucky enough to not have dealt with Tribunals. A few years ago we got a contract with a company called peninsula who sort out all your H&S paperwork, offer employment law advice, and most importantly, they cover costs in the case of tribunal. Sounds great , but is £390 per month. I really just wanted to know the costs of tribunals (time and financial), because our contract runs out soon and that money could be put to better things. We are really lucky to have wonderful staff and i cant imagi…

Learning journeys taken
by Guest- 4 replies

From one thing to another. We had a busy couple of months with staff problems and now it has turned out that a member of staff we have let go off has actually taken children's learning journeys from a previous setting off the premises and never returned them. We now have the issue that the business owner is very cross (understandably), the parents are upset and the blame goes to the current staff team. The business owner is finding out of there is anything we can do to retrieve them as there is no way of contacting the previous member of staff and our advisory teacher from the council says we should inform OFSTED etc so now I am trying to work our what we ar…

EAL or not?
by Guest- 5 replies

Hi all Just after some views. I have one child whose parents speak Punjabi (Dad good English, mum not so) but they insist on their child speaking english and speak this at home (have tried to encourage them to speak their home language but Dad not having it). Then another whose mum is Thai (English ok) and Dad is English and they too speak English at home. Is this really EAL? Unfortunately both these children are having speech and language difficulties but one is very shy and the other has a hearing aid. Im not sure it is english that is the additional language? Thanks.
