Unfair Dismissal? Advice

I have just been contacted by a previous colleague for advice today and I am not really sure where she should turn, although I think she has been unfairly dismissed. When she arrived at work today she was told she was being dismissed because she phoned in sick on Monday, the management then changed their mind and said it wasn't because of the sick day, but it was due to lack of commitment & not willing to do hours required. She had recently been offered to reduce her hours from full time to term time only and excepted (I was term time only and she took my hours when I left). When she said that she hadn't asked for term time but had been offered it the manager told …

Water off

We have been told that our water might be off for a day as work is carried out. Does anyone know if we are allowed to stay open if we get bottled water to drink and have buckets to flush the toilet? Interested to know if there is any legal issue here.

Hi All, It just occurred to me that if your nursery is registered for up to 8 year olds (for the purposes of holiday clubs etc) would you be allowed to offer school age children (aged up to 8) a place for the day on a strike day when schools are shut? Obviously with sufficient space/staff etc? Wasn't sure where to look to find out and then thought that one of you would know! Thank you! xx

Hi all am thinking after doing peer obs that I need to do some staff training an pretty jolly quick. I have two new members of staff and some that have been there for years but really need to brush up on some skills. So was thinking I used to use teachers tv etc... but that doesn't exist anymore. EYFS CD not quite what I am after either. I know you can buy DVD's that have lots of little video clips but they are too expensive for me. So can anyone suggest any links that might be helpful??? my staff are definitely visual learners and I feel that something like a case study, or work through example we can do as a team would be really useful. Well at least would gi…

Deputy Manager

Hi, I have a quick question - Our Deputy Manager is leaving at the end of term. We have a number of Level 3 staff at the setting, however none of them are suitable to take over as deputy. (Either do not want to do it, or not enough hours etc). We have a member of staff in mind, however she is not qualified. She is doing her Level 3 at the moment, but only just started it. I have checked the Ofsted Requirements and it states that "The provider must ensure there is a named deputy who, in their judgement, is capable and qualified to take charge in the manager’s absence." - It does not state that this person must be a Level 3 (or qualified). What do you think ? …

I can't imagine I'm the only one - I can honestly say I have never felt so overwhelmed as I currently feel. It just never seems to end and there are not enough hours in the day. As for the EYFS making our life easier and less paperwork blah blah blah - well...........

Last year we had a complaint made to Ofsted by a disgruntled family. Ofsted inspected and although they obviously did not tell us who had made the complaint they did tell us the contents of the complaint so it was obvious who had made it. The inspection confirmed the complaint was unsubstantiated and obviously malicious but it was still an unpleasant experience. Today I have received a call from another member of the family who lives at the same address, asking for a place for her child - although I don't like to turn business away I really can't face going through that again - can I say no?

Hi, I have searched the internet and cannot find any recent answers to this and the framework isn't clear and myself as the owner and the manager both have a different view (don't worry not an issue just that we need to know who is right so we can plan)! Can you mix age ratios within one member of staff? For example one member to 2 x 2yr olds and 2 x 3 yr olds? Or One member of staff per age group using the current ratios or Look at the setting as a whole and count the two year olds twice (in effect mixing the ratios per staff member). Hair pulling!!! Many thanks if you can find anything recent and written down in laymans terms! xx
