One of my staff was off sick all of last week. She called on Monday morning to say she had a tummy bug so I said she would need to stay off the following day and to let me know how she was. She text on Tuesday to say she had been to the doctor and got antibiotics (for a tummy bug??) hadn't been sick since that morning so could she come back the next day. She also said she had tried to call that morning but there was no answer. When I did 1471, there had been no calls since 5pm the day before. I said again that she would need to stay off on Wednesday but hoped we would see her on Thursday. On Thursday morning her mother rang me to say she was very ill again and she…

Hi Everyone We use alcohol free wipes to clean wounds on children if they have fallen in the garden and grazed themselves. A member of staff has just been on a first aid course and keeps telling staff not to use them, just use a tissue and water. I feel that a dirty wound needs to be cleaned properly, especially if they are staying all day. Does anyone else use them? or know that I shouldn't. Many Thanks

Should staff be paid for doing first aid training? Normally we do it on an evening unpaid but this time we have done it in the day and had to lose 12 hours pay because of this The questions I have are Is it legal that we have to do it unpaid? It says in our staff handbook that we are not paid for it but nowhere does it state that we have to lose paid hours because of it. Our handbook also states that all of us have to be first aid trained. Out of 25 staff only 12 of us were made to do it - surely this isn't right either? The EYFS states only 1 person needs to be first aid trained and as far as I am aware our council doesn't make it part of funding obligations for a…

Recent inspection identified weaknesses in some staff 's practice around demonstrating understanding of supporting learning, next steps, confidence, encouraging critical thinking, differentiating, providing challenge. They were there and observed for less than three hours. I know some staff (older members) are challenged by what they are being asked to do under Sir Michaels new regime and the new inspection but we are not as bad as the report makes out. Other aspects of the setting were praised ( working with parents, policies, procedures, safeguarding, supporting special needs, behaviour, staff being caring) so its not all bad. But how do I show how we are going to tackl…

Hi All We're having a bit of a dilema and I can't seem to find a difinitive answer anywhere (sigh...) If you have a child in your setting who has an english speaking parents and another language speaking parent, do you classify them as English as an additional language or not? We have some families (single parent and both parents) who speak another language at home and absolutely consdier these children to be EAL, however, we have many who have one English parent and one other nationality parent, in all cases we ask parents what they consider their child's first language to be, however, Ofsted accused us of pandering to parents, so if they say English but we know mum sp…

I am a PVI setting. In Feb we had our AGM and 5 new members joined the committee. After a few hiccups with filling the EY2 paper form, then having to do it on line my Chair person has just been informed that due to our Charity number changing 2 couple of years ago and Ofsted not being informed she now has to fill out a EY0 form, which we did last week. The information on this form asks all the questions that Ofsted should already have about us. We are waiting for Ofsted to turn up and inspect us any time now. We were inspected in Dec 2009 and received outstanding. I am really worried. My Chair has spoken to Ofsted and explained that we are waiting for our inspection…

I have a member of staff who likes to pass on things said by other members of staff. For example that they are not happy with their position at work or the level of their wages. She does this in a being honest, sharing important information sort of way but it always comes across as gossiping and talking behind people's backs. I have tried to be upfront and open about it and not be drawn into keeping secrets about people and it has been very clear on occasions that the other staff do not appreciate it but yet it keeps happening. I have said it is up to the other staff to come to me with their moans and I definitely will not act on second hand information as the manager. …
