http://www.outofschoolalliance.co.uk/minimum-staff-numbers I cannot believe I'm asking about ratios again, really thought we had it sussed. In September our numbers are starting very low, possibly 7 children. A member of staff sent me the link above. It reads that the eyfs now says you can operate with just 1 member of staff if within ratio eg 7 children aged 3 (albeit a safeguarding nightmare). Yet does the eyfs not also say there has to be a deputy and manager present at all times? So your minimum would always be two members of staff with a level 3? Thank you for your thoughts, clearly I wouldn't want to run with just 1 adult but I do like to be abl…

So, I told my staff today that this will be my last year as Manager. My Husband retires in January 2015 and we will be moving back to Yorkshire as soon as the house is sold after that. I've been doing it for so long now (since 1990) that it's second nature and I'm so used to filling every waking hour with it that it's going to be hard to hand over knowledge that I have gained as needed over the years. So my point is, has anyone out there done this, and how did you manage the handover? I'm starting with handing over the register to my Deputy - she now has day-to-day responsibility for it and any changes that come along. What should I give her next? I don't …

In a recent budget (I can't remember which one) the Chancellor mentioned the introduction of an Employment Allowance for employer NICS. This will hopefully benefit small business and charity employers and help reduce their overall wages bill - for more info check out this web page and follow the link to calculate whether it will be of any benefit to your business https://www.gov.uk/employment-allowance

Apologies if this has been put somewhere else but the PSLA are undertaking an Early Years Agenda Survey. I know there have been some posts on here about their voice being a little quiet. Maybe we could help them roar like a lion by giving them some ammo via the survey. You do not have to be a PSLA member and the survey is online. See the link below. https://www.pre-school.org.uk/whats-new/early-years-survey

Signs in the garden!
by Guest- 24 replies

A recent inspection at a nearby nursery from Ofsted stated they didn't have enough signs in the garden. We had lots until I ripped them all down last week as they secured on the fence panels by staples, which were frowned upon! Does anyone have any amazing ideas on how to displays signs in the garden? Without the use of staples! Many thanks xx

Afternoon all! I'm just looking for some advice from you with regards to those parents who book places at multiple nurseries then decide which one to take (and don't bother contacting the others). We are a full day care nursery but we also offer some free places (fully funded, term time only Pre School places) this has a slight impact on our finances as all our staff are employed 52 weeks per year, but we swallow the lost revenuse during the holiday weeks as we use the time for folders, paperwork, trips ect so it's not the end of the world!. However, last year I became aware that some families were booking free places at multiple nurseries (the 'best' one being the fa…

Does anyone run a preschool or setting that operates a crèche too? Were in an ideal spot with a David Lloyds gym (they no longer have a crèche) so are wondering if it's feasible or not?

So yesterday was last day of term before we broke up for Easter and I was looking forward to sharing the children's excitement about the Easter bunny coming but it didn't happen as a staff member handed in her notice by thrusting her letter at me while I was talking to the business manager. She then had a rant that I would be happy she was leaving as I was never happy with anything she did and that I was the cause of her leaving. I was so shell shocked that I stood there while she listed all my faults towards her that were not true. This has all come about because I stood up to her this week in a staff meeting and told her that she had to change her practice in the settin…

I've been trying to recruit a full time Senior Practitioner for two months now with no success! I've advertised through the FIS but they don't always upload the forms and I was staggered to find out that an agency would charge 10% of annual salary! This is completely beyond the budget of a small nursery and pre-school that is already struggling with the loss of top up fees! How do other nurseries recruit new staff members?
