Morning all I'm after some inspiration With doing our termly supervisions now I feel like I'm continually meeting with staff and ironing out problems even more quickly - which is obviously a positive thing Next month we have our annual appraisals with the Chairperson and now feel as if there's hardly anything to talk about! So any new ideas?!

We are about to recruit our first male member of staff. He has never worked in early years before, but his job description is the same as a practitioner - he is planning to study for qualifications, etc, and we will support him in his role alongside his female colleagues. I wondered how other settings have managed to successfully integrate a male member of staff, both with colleagues, but particularly with parents/carers. I am hoping there will be no negative comments, but need to be prepared just in case. I have no qualms about the children thoroughly enjoying having a male about! Many thanks for any advice/experiences.

Hi folk, well I think I'm going to throw sanity out the window and we'll change the structure and I'll become a charitable trustee of playgroup. The hope is this will add some security to the setting. Can anyone who's already done this give any advice? Also do you know if a member of staff can even be a trustee? Oh, meant to say we're looking at becoming a CIO with a foundation model constitution. Thank you all for your input x x x

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone had a sample fee increase letter I could take a look at? We are a private nursery. We have been running at £1 per session less than the local children's centres for over a year now, and with the new term and financial year starting we feel now is probably the best time to put up our fees to reflect the demands of inflation on business rates, insurance, staff, utilities etc. We are Ofsted graded good and feel our price should be affordable but also reflect the area where we are and the quality of care we are providing. We are thinking of putting them up to £37 for a full day session, which is still at the bottom end of pricing fo…

Hello, hope everyone has had a lovely bank holiday. I haven't been on here for sometime so feel a little bit cheeky for asking for advice! Basically at the moment the nursery is managed by a committee of members made up from the governing body of the local school, we have a purpose build unit on school grounds. I was told on Friday that the governing body no longer wish to be responsible/manage the nursery and unless I take it on independtly it closes and there is no more nursery to open in September!! I am willing to give it a go but would like to hear from you people on how you run your settings.....e.g do you have a committee, who is your committee made up of…

Staff days off

Hope someone with more experience than I can offer advice! Our pre-school has a rule (in contract and in policy) that no holidays are to be taken while the pre-school is open. The manager has always allowed staff to swap shifts for special one-off occasions (50th birthdays, big wedding anniversarys, their childrens graduations etc) which has so far worked well and noone has abused the system and respected that days would be given like that for one-off things. We have an employee who has requested the last day of term off to go on holiday early - the manager said no, and the committee all said no (committee run pre-school). Having called PLA they advised that because o…
