I love a list way more than I should do. I get genuine pleasure from ticking it off but what I would really love is a list I could get to the bottom of. Has this ever happened to a nursery manager?!! It's never ending. Must. Learn. To. Delegate!

I've worked at my setting for over four years and other staff around seven or so. Throughout this time we have not had breaks during the day but sat with the children at lunch and had a quick slurp of tea in the kitchen when children have snack if possible. Our chair person has now introduced 20 min unpaid lunch breaks and has got unqualified parent/volunteer to cover. This leaves one qualified and one unqualified with the children in the main room and the other member of staff in the other room, not allowed to do any work. However the staff member on break would not be able to leave site as then we would be out of ratio so technically we have to stay on site. So should w…

Hi, I hope this is the right board and I apology if not, I have a practitioner who is brilliant in small groups but is struggling with the "bigger picture" supervision. For example the practitioner will be sat with a child doing an activity and not notice what the child 3feet away from her is doing even if it is potentially harmful to said child. As you can imagine this is become somewhat of a issue within the setting. Im having a meeting with the practitoner tomorrow and plan to put mentoring in place to help. But my question is how do you teach someone to pay attention to what is going on in the room whilst doing an activity. Any tips or hints greatly app…

NEG

Hi I am an experienced Manager working for a new company. I am lucky enough to have an Administrator. When discussing invoices with her recently it looks as though the NEG given to the parents may be wrong. I have queried the company finance manager as to where the figure came from. His reply was that it was probably the hourly rate we charge as a nursery. Again I queried this as the NEG in this area is £3.81 ph and what we are giving does not, in any way, equate to this. His reply was we have to provide 15 hours of care, which we are doing at our rate and not that at the rate we get from the government. I asked him was he saying that we don't give the parents the full a…

Hello, Just wondering - if we have four under 2's in the baby room can we have one level 3 and one unqualified staff member? We have done it like this before and never had any issues with ofsted etc but someone has now said it is not allowed. I know it is half of all other staff needing to have qualification but what if there is only one other staff member? You can't half them!! Altogether in the nursery there are usually only 2 unqualified and 5/6 qualified but wondered how it works within the room - complicated!! Thanks :-)

As you know, I'm retiring at the end of this academic year. Whilst typing up my supervision notes from the latest round I find myself wondering what should happen to all my file copies of these after July. I don't feel that some of the contents should be shared with the new manager (current deputy). As a lot of the contents were divulged in total confidence. Some things are very personal and there is no 'need to know' at all. Should I shred them or hand them back to staff? What does everyone else do?

Oh my goodness! I am using Pre-school Software provided by our local authority for calculating fees, issuing invoices, creating registers etc & it's driving me mad! It is so confusing, inflexible and full of errors. Can anyone recommend an alternative system. I used to use a spreadsheet I had created and am considering returning to that but it wasn't completely accurate itself and will need to be updated before I can start using it again. Is anyone able and willing to share their spreadsheets they use for calculating fees and issuing invoices please?

We have banked with Alliance and Leicester for years, then the acct has been taken over by Santander. Just recently they have removed our ability to bank electronically and we have to go back to writing cheques and we can't change anything about our acct without a letter from all signatories! Can anyone recommend a bank acct for a non for profit charity that allows electronic banking?? Thank you, Spiral :-I

Help!! We use First Steps nursery management system and are having a complete nightmare trying to make the invoices compliant for our funded children. Does anyone else use this system or can you recommend another one that is simple to use and that produces accurate invoices the parents can understand??
