I know that many of you know that we had our 'knock on the door' this week; but I just want to say (as I know she lurks on here) what a lovely inspector we had. It was really nice to just sit with a cuppa and talk about the Preschool in a relaxed and informal way, having a bit of a laugh and just generally talking about how things were going. To be able to express my feelings about 'my baby' with another professional who really understood what I was saying was brilliant. I felt that she really listened and concentrated on what was important - which of course is what it feels like for the children we care for, how they progress and what the families think of us. She di…

A member of my staff has broken confidentiality over a safeguarding issue. She is 18 years old and level 3 qualified. She was with us as a student and I employed her in September as a nursery assistant. As a student she was given information both verbally and written on confidentiality. As an employee she was given a full induction including the importance of confidentiality. She has a copy of our confidentiality policy. She has signed her induction document to confirm she has understood the information shared at her induction. She has also signed a tear out page of our staff handbook, which also explains confidentiality and our disciplinary procedures. She overhe…

Keeping Ofsted in the know?

Afternoon everyone. I've got the Preschool Christmas Party running on Friday which is being held for 2 hours within the usual session time but have invited all children even if they don't usually attend Fridays. We are registered for 26 children but there will be 31 attending and ratios will be correct so do we contact Ofsted to let them know? We are due an inspection but hoping that they won't choose the last day of term before Christmas!

Hi Everyone During our recent inspection the inspector pointed out to me that we don't need to follow the EYFS for our 1-3pm (2 hour) session as it is less than the 2 1/2 hour minimum. I 'kind off' knew that anything under 2 1/2 hour was not cover by the EYFS but thought that this was for crèche's etc. We are a preschool offering 2, 3, 4 and 6 hour sessions. Our LEA has just started enforcing a 2 1/2 hour minimum policy for funding, so we have had to fit all our autumn born 3 year olds into lunch after xmas. I would always follow the statutory guidance to ensure that our ensure is covered but was thinking that we don't need to do the keyworker books etc. We onl…

Unreasonable?

Hello I had an issue today which I'd like to have other opinions on please. This morning I received a message at 6.50am from member of staff (S) "I won't be coming in today as I've been up all night with child and need some sleep, sorry". So I arranged cover and then S came in after finishing her earlier hours elsewhere (yes, she'd worked 7.30-9.00am elsewhere!) and so I told her it was unacceptable not to work her hours (9.00-11.30). She then stomped off. So, was I unreasonable? How would others move forward? All comments appreciated.

Insurance...Loss of Revenue

I had a chat with someone yesterday about insurance and they stated that we should have loss of revenue insurance at the same amount (or above) as our annual income. This would cover loss of earnings, rental costs if we had to hire a hall etc...is this person right? Thoughts please, thank you, Spiral :-)

Well this time last year I had a staff member make an unfounded complaint to Ofsted. Thursday morning Mrs O knocks on the door due to parent complaint. The complaint once again was unfounded, however we obviously had a full inspection (3rd one this year). Again the outcome was the same as the last two and overall a positive experience. However the complaint that was made was from a parent that is still bringing their child in even though she basically said in complaint we were negligent and had a child in the setting for 2 hours that had signs of concussion (a complete fabrication). This family have problems and we have worked really hard with them and feel like this has …

Can anyone give any information on online training? We are finding it harder and harder to book places on LA training courses, even for things like CP and First Aid. I know that St. John's do First Aid courses but they seem really expensive and we need a cheaper option. Can you even do first Aid online?

Hi All have been told by the Ofsted that despite observing my staff which I do regularly (offering any guidance at the time) and being able to talk freely about staff strengths and weakness's (proving I thought that I have been observing them) I need to 'write' all these observations down (whether there are problems or not) like we would do for the children really!! It seems without 'written' observations on my staff on top of supervision records (discussions etc...) the system is not robust enough! I wonder if anyone has a pre forma for this before I go and design one? I had supervision records staff meeting records and appraisal records but no written ob…
