Incompetent Chair

Hi there, I have a real issue with my ehem 'chair'. She was quite happy to vote herself in at the AGM, yet since then hasn't attended a meeting, frequently has her phone off and is really worrying me. She's told us she has a gcse in maths, and wants to now study maths at degree level so she can teach year 7's maths (exactly!!!) However, now we are advertising a paid position she says she wants to apply...eek! Of course this would require her resignation. The committee need someone who is strong to help organise events and to be the 'face' of the pre-school, however I am very aware of the deadly silence and how everyone is worrying. Is there a way we/com…

I desperately need help, a member of staff has booked unauthorised holiday for 2 whole months Jan to Feb to tour Asia and Australia, without checking it out with me first. it is on her facebook stating holiday booked, a staff member informed me. This particular staff who is a good worker, but when it comes to holiday seems to think it is a different rule for her. She has been abroad this year in June for 10 days, will be going to Florida for 3 weeks in October and to be fair booked in Jan due to a wedding. I have a staff who is going on maternity in September, and we are due OFSTED in fact a year overdue. The only problem I have with this staff is holidays which she reg…

Dear all, I have certain parents that pick their children up late, 10 mins sometimes 30 mins, usual excuse traffic, runs into the nursery breathless panting, next minute, they are ok, chatting away. We charge them, give them invoice, but they don't pay, staff are now rightly getting annoyed. we are open from 8-6pm, we tried to extend the hours, but staffing wise it proved difficult and not all parents stayed till 6:30 normally left with just 1/2 children. The help i want now is how can i word a letter/note to parents politely via our newsletter/memo stating that it will not be tolerated and unfair to staff, and fines to be paid promptly I have to admit we are st…

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I can't find it. We have gone over and over this issue no end of times at my setting and I thought all was sorted but it's come up again recently. What does everyone else do regarding paying staff to do training (CPD) We started off by paying all staff their normal wages for any training they did during working hours but nothing for training they do outside of working hours. Some people weren't happy with this as could not get on courses during their working hours...... So......I changed it to everyone getting a payment of £5 per hour for any training they did whether in work time or not - this meaning that g…

Hi, can anyone tell me how I can check the level of a qualification? I have a copy of the certificate with ref numbers on and have been informed that it is equivalent to a level 2 qualification. Is there a way to check this? The certificate dates back over 10 years. Thanks.

Hi, just wondering what you all think with regard to a staffing issue that I've been mulling over for a while. we are a nursery with 2 rooms that are adjacent with interconnecting door. the door is open during session times with a stair gate across. One room has 2 year olds the other 3/4 year olds. I look at each room separately in terms of ratios, so for example if I only had 6 children in 2 year olds I'd have 2 staff and if I had 10 in 3/4 year olds I'd have 2 staff in there as well. If we were all together in one room with those numbers I could have 1 less member of staff but we like the 2 rooms and so do our parents. However, it costs to do this and I'm wondering i…

I'm a manager of a pre school and I deal with the day to day running, planning etc and the owner deals with the business side and all finances. I'm finding it difficult to do parts of my job with no access/control of finances. Eg craft supply orders, DBS checks as I can only do so much before handing it over as payment is needed (and is not always getting done) Does anyone else have issues like this and how do you deal with it??

Looking for other perspectives on this as it is driving me mad. I have a staff member that seems to have no concept of appropriate conduct when talking to parents. She is incredibly flirtatious when talking with Dads/male carers and extremely over the top. Equally when talking to any parent she over dramatises everything. For example if she is getting an accident form signed she say " oh it was a really hard bump she vas ever so upset" when really it was a slight knock with a few tears, I fear one day this could land us in hot water. I have tried th gently gently approach with her but am getting to the point where I think I need to try something else.
