Hi I had a visit from my sure start teacher today and she explained that we are probs in a position to take more children than we think we can. I work using the ratios only so for example 5 children under 3 3 over 3 In my eyes means 2 staff with no room for any others. She said that there was the capacity to take more with just 2 staff. She explained that: 1 staff is equal to 24 points, a 2-3 year is equal to 6 points and a 3 year old and over is equal to 3 points. Does anyone use this system? So two staff would be 48 points. The 2-3 years old would be 5 x 6 = 30 And the 3 years and overs would be 3 x 3 = 9 Giving a total…

Our supervisor is going on maternity leave and the acting supervisor is stepping up. Would you give the acting supervisor a wage increase whilst in that position? Thanks

Hi All, I know that in theory this should be the simpliest thing to work out, but I am really struggling with organising my occupancy. I have a spreadsheet based upon the exact hours that each child does - but I can't see wood for trees with it!! Any advice would be helpful Thanks :-)

We are about to lose an assistant at our Preschool who has been with us for about eighteen months. We have little time to advertise and employ someone new before Sept as break up in two weeks, but the lady who was in this position previously is interested in coming back. She is CRB checked and knows the routine of the nursery. She has also been volunteering for us recently. I was thinking that we could give her a temp contract so we have something sorted for Sept but as she has been employed by us before how do we stand about having to advertise and interview for this job. It seems a long process to go through if we have someone ideal but don't want to go against the rule…

Does the manager have to go on a trip too?

Hi there, we have our annual trip out to the zoo next week. All of the children are going (with one parent) and so are all of the staff. Much as I'd love to go, I have a mountain of paperwork and would really be better off staying at work and sorting it out. Would this be deemed as ok? My deputy is going along too and there are first aiders going as well. Thankyou, Spiral :-)

Bear with me, I'm inclined to ramble! 14 years ago, I collected my daughter from nursery and was greeted with 'she's been a pickle today'. New to the county of Essex I'd never heard this expression used with my older children. I distinctly remember asking the 'auntie' what she meant. I was quite offended and after a conversation with auntie discovered that she hadn't behaved as well as she should have that day. I went away with the feeling that 'pickle' was an acceptable swear word. Since then I have had this abhorrence to the word and any others that I've heard practitioners use about or to a child. As a setting deputy I have explained to my staff why it's unacceptabl…
