Hi all I am now a little confused about something I understood so wondering if I could throw something out there to get second opinions. We have always said that any area of responsibility should be undertaken by someone with a level 3 qualification or higher, (thinking about roles such as SEN or SENDCO lol and H&S, Deputy etc..) now Ofsted have said that they class my member of staff as a level 6 as she has a degree even though it is a psychology degree. I should add here she is undertaking EYITT starting in September. Now she is amazing, a natural has loads of experience with baby sign, training people in this and developing communication and early language…

cultural differences in feeding/eating

Hi there, we have a child who has been with us since Sept. He starts school this year and his family speak Bengali. Today his father came in and complained that we do not sit with him and open his packets/breaking his food up and feeding him by putting the food into his mouth. We have tried really hard to get his son to eat with the other children (15 children/4 staff). However the child has laughed at us and said 'no', he has also thrown his food onto the floor and laughed. His father asked if we could designate a member of staff to facilitate this, but we have stated that at school this would not happen and he should learn some independence - this puts …

Advice please. It may sound obvious to some of you but.... I took on a new member of staff on a temporary contract to the end of July (1 term) as I wanted to see how she was and also wasn't sure how much work would be available after this term. As its worked out, although I may still have the work, I don't want to keep her on for various reasons. The temporary contract clearly states the review date so, is there any reason why I can't tell her, thanks very much and best wishes for the future( type of thing) without stating lots of reasons why I don't think she's suitable to keep on ...

hi there, I'm updating the staff handbook. Has anyone got a 'code of practice' that I can have a look at? Just drawn a bit of a blank as ours is so old and out of date! Thank you in advance, Spiral.

Keeping Records at Home
by Guest- 7 replies

Has anyone attained, or attempted to attain, agreement from Ofsted for keeping children's records (i.e. Learning Journeys) at home to enable them to be updated? I don't mean that they would be kept off the premises for any length of time, just occasionally as the need arises. x

Hi all another quick question. I am about to shake things up a bit at work, part of this process will be to provide more opportunities to observe staff and 'coach' them in session times. Now I feel that this might be very challenging if I am counted in ratio. I wondered how others go about it and if in other settings managers are out of ratio in order to get some of these jobs 'done' ? Also who do you as managers ask to observe you and your practice??

School Nursery - Policies
by Guest- 12 replies

Can anyone direct me to where I might find model policies - I am especially looking for a 'Behaviour Policy'. I work in a maintained nursery and have always 'followed' the school policies and procedures; the school has a large file of policies, but to be honest they really don't reflect or address the needs of the nursery class. With a Welfare Review imminent I'd like to have answers - are there any other nursery teachers who have had, and overcome, this problem? Is there a site or place on the forum where I might find and adapt suitable policies for nursery? I feel I am drowning in paperwork at the moment I have so many questions about the WR audit and the audit is a…

HELP!
by Guest- 17 replies

Please can someone advise? There appears to be conflicting information in the Statutory Framework with regard to Staff: child ratios. I am a teacher working in a maintained nursery unit (morning sessions). I also work afternoon sessions which are run as pre-school sessions with a change of staff. In the morning I have a nursery nurse and level 3 TA and the afternoons vary depending on numbers - I sometimes work with a level 3 TA, sometimes with a level 2 TA and sometimes with both. I have a 'Welfare Review' meeting arranged next week and have been looking through the CC Welfare Review Tool; on checking the Statutory framework I found ... 3.32 For children aged th…
