Hi, I am looking for some advice on the use of walkie talkies for staff communication in the setting. We are possibly moving one of our rooms to another area in the building that we are situated. we have no intercom system installed and I am looking into purchasing walkie talkies to enable staff to communicate with each other during the day to help support each other etc, has anyone had any experiences with using them , how did it go and where did you buy them from? I have spent time looking on the internet and its a bit of a mine field!!! so any advice or recommendations would be welcome !! thank you

Hi I am hoping to take on an ex-parent as a student on a Level 3 Diploma. I have got her two references back (one from a major retail store and one from a social care agency) and both confirm only the dates she was employed; they won't fill in my specific reference forms as it is not company policy. The dates do match up, the DBS check has come back 'clean' and I do know her reasonably well through having had three of her four children in my setting. I have written to another previous employer in the hope she will complete my form but I'm not sure as this is another non-childcare sector employer. What would you do? Thank you, A

On Monday I was diagnosed with cancer of the womb and I need to have a full hysterectomy, so I will need to have up to three months off of work. As to manager would I need to inform ofsted that I will be away from the setting for that amount of time. I have a deputy and 3rd in charge who run the nursery when I am off or sick. Thank you in advance I am trying to get everything sorted before I have to have time off work

We are a small pack away preschool and have been offered the use of another room in the community hall where we have term time morning sessions. This is an exciting expansion however , our Manager wants to use both rooms for free flow ( and the outside space) and I am not sure how this will work. Her idea is to have the seven areas set up across both rooms, so for instance, role play in one along with book corner etc and then paints and other messy activities in the other room as it has no carpet . No one in our staff team has experience in working in two rooms, I wondered what happens if you have a child who spends most of their time in one room, and there for not getti…

CRB check-Australia

I am interviewing a candidate who has lived in Australia for the last five years and I am concerned that getting a CRB/DBS may be problematic and this would go against her when making a decision. Has anyone obtained checks for employees from Australia and how easy and how long did it take. I tried to take someone on last year who had worked in Spain and after 3 months of endless phone calls had to give up. P.S. I have had an awful lot of applications from qualiified social workers for my managers position but sadly despite some with a lot of experience with children and one who is a level 2 and has run an out of school club and worked in a nursery cannot be considered…

Please can someone advise me with regard to supervision. I'm in a maintained nursery and would like to know how other teachers manage staff appraisals and, more importantly, 'supervision'; any examples of proformas used would be really helpful! Thank you. x

Would you report this to ofsted?

I have a friend who has a 2 year old in a local nursery. She is beside herself as the nursery is understaffed, ratio's incorrect, poor hygiene and to cap it all the deputy manager walked out in tears the other day. Rumours are rife that members of staff are unqualified and even that some lied about qualifications. Would ofsted treat her worries seriously? She is trying to find a new setting for her child, but her choices are limited due to location etc. She has tried to speak to management, but she feels that due to her age (she is only 20) they fob her off. I would say yes, go ahead and inform ofsted, but she is scared in case the nursery find out who reported the…

Policies state that a term's notice must be given if a parent wishes to remove a child and that they have to pay the full term's fees if they don't. Parents are informed about this when joining. I would like to know what policies other setting have about this and if any parent not giving notice has ever paid. Thanks!
