Not had this in all my many yrs of experience . We have a mum with terminal cancer, her young child has another yr with us before going to school. He has already been with us a year. Mum was diagnosed with stomach cancer, 3 months ago it has now spread and they are not treating anymore. Have any of you been in this situation? I have had grandparents, pets who have died but not a parent. Do not know what her prognosis is but any advice on what we can do to support the whole family, other than giving him, the family and mum happy memories, is there something else. Also have to support my staff some of whom have got to know her fairly well over the last year. Thank…

Hi all This message and link has just been sent to me I don't know if anyone is interested Dear Supporters, It gives me great pleasure to inform you that our campaign and this petition against increased ratios in early years settings has been successful. This morning Nick Clegg announced that he would not be supporting increased ratios and therefore the idea was ‘dead in the water’ This is a huge achievement and a result of campaigning by many organisations and individuals. On behalf of the children of this country I would like to thank you for your support because now the children of this country will experience high quality early years care and education throu…

A couple of years ago we changed our accountant due to cost. This year we've just received a bill for £572! Can I ask how much other people pay and who you use? Our committee is pretty much made of me and the staff, no real treasurer so we're not really in a position to do much ourselves.

Morning We had a comm meeting last week and had to talk about if we wished to increase our fees for Sept A decision will be made by our next meeting, but it was a tricky one which caused lots of discussion! Some felt that as the dearest in our area (only by £1 per session) on top of the fact that with the current climate people just can't afford it. Others felt that our costs are rising too and although we are above minimum wage, staff haven't had a pay rise for over 3 years and that minimum wage is catching us up. Our numbers are very low for September, and increasing the fees may not help our cause either. What is everyone else doing for September?

I believed that I kept myself aware of new legislation, but missed the one about not being allowed to send a health questionnaire, or even ask health related questions, to an applicant before offering them a job. Thinking that perhaps someone else doesn't know, here is the explanation our very helpful Senior Development Officer sent me: he Equality Act 2010 now makes it illegal to ask health-related questions or ask the new staff member (paid and volunteers) to complete a health questionnaire before you have offered them a job. This includes asking an applicant how many days they have had off sick (either within an application form or during the interview) before a j…

Hi all I wonder if any of you can help? we are at the moment a committee run pre-school that operates out of a memorial hall. We have excellent links with one of the primary schools which is about 100/200 yards down the road. We struggle as I am sure most of us do to get parents to sign up for the committee. Although we are a fairly big pre-school for the area we also have a lot of competition in the local town. Therefore if we say without committee we shut I get the feeling most people just think fine we'll go elsewhere. We decided that we wouldn't want to go onto the school grounds as we are used to the big space and autonomy of the hall and (to cut a lon…

Shorter Hours Through Contracts
by Guest- 5 replies

Hi Everyone Sorry, I'm back again already! I am just wondering if anyone has experience of enforcing reduced/shorter hours using their staff's existing contracts. Our staff have a clause in their t&c's that says "There will be occasions when additional/reduced hours are necessary to meet specific or special requirements". I think this will have come from a standard PSLA template. I spoke to our local PSLA office and they weren't aware of anyone having tested it. When I sought legal advice about if we could insist on shorter hours based on the contracts in place, (basically to avoid a redundancy), I was advised that as it was not very specific it wa…
