hi, Just updating staff records and wondered whether I need to keep all records from old employees? Would it be sufficent just to keep a record of the dates the staff member was employed and shred the rest? Thanks Jo

I am having a nightmare with staff meetings and keeping staff focused on their planning responsibilities. We used to have an hour long meeting (paid) every week after work finished when we would review the weeks activites and consider possibilities for extending / developing these the next week and go over general infromation staff needed to know. I came into work, on my day off, to lead these...this year however I have chosen not to put myself out and have tried to make it fairer by trying different ways to organise these - e.g. we didnt have any at all the first term back after summer as a trial and that really didnt work out so then tried holding meetings on a differe…

Hi I am thinking of employing a company for the HR side of my business, contracts, staff handbook, all grievances, disciplinaries etc. Does anyone else do this and if so what companies do you use. Thanks Kris

Hi As you may know, we are struggling to stay open for September as we don't have enough children. We have been thinking of maybe accepting children from a younger age (18months) for 1 session per week in order to gain more interest as none of the other local pre-schools do this. A couple of our current parents are already interested in this. We have a building with a large hall which we use at the minute and it has an adjoining smaller room which is not very often used. We thought if we use the small room for the 18 month olds with 1 staff member with a stair gate at the door so staff can be seen at all times. We will then continue to keep the 2-4 year olds w…

Manager / deputy

Hi, I am the manager of a day nursery, I have a full time deputy who i feel does a decent job. The owner of the nursery wants to employ a nursery secretary, the thing is they want the secretary to stand in for me on my days off as they are not to keen on my deputy. The thing is I said the secretary should be at least NVQ 3 in childcare if shes going to stand in for me, but they say not.

Hi, I am looking at studying either foundation degree, certificate in higher education or BA in early years through open university. My issue is getting funding as I cannot afford to pay for it myself and my setting may contribute some but I am going to need to get funding. £2500 per 60 credits is a lot to find! Local council only has very limited funding so I'm wondering is there any other early years funding out there I am not finding?

I am currently studying for the EYPS. My setting are in the process of redoing everyone's contracts. At the moment our contracts require that we all give one month's notice. It has been suggested that anyone receiving training would now need to remain at the current setting for 12 months after the training has been completed or pay back course fees/wages. Although I am not moving on to another job at present I am worried about the prospect of having to give 12 months notice as it is possible that my family could be moving abroad due to my husband's own job sending him overseas. Can my setting do this if those of us beginning training did not sign anything referring to…

Part time hours

Our nursery has a low staff turnover which has resulted in many of our staff 'growing up' within our setting and going on to start families. This means we have lots of staff who work part time. We (myself and the director) have always tried hard to be as flexible as possible but a line has to be drawn somewhere! Not everyone can work school hours for example! We have 2 staff pregnant at the moment - they are currently full-time. They both want to come back part-time. Due to organising key groups etc... it is difficult to work with so few full time workers. has anyone ever refused to change job conditions and hours after maternity before? Am I right in thinking that we onl…

Hi all, I am thinking of getting a clocking machine, because of lateness in the mornings and coming back from lunches as well, do you think it is too much like big brother watching you, it is just that staff are telling me some come in late and not signing in the right time. What do you think? Thanks.
