Hi I have a Mum beginning training in Early Years about to start soon with us on a voluntary basis. She has helped out quite a lot in the past and is CRB checked. I am now in a bit of a panic as I haven't checked any references for her as I feel she has volunteered quite a lot and she hasn't worked for several years as she has been raising a family, so apart from family and friends I am not sure who she would ask for a reference. We are overdue Ofsted and I know they are red hot on vetting procedures. Any suggestion what I need to have in place please? I will be doing and induction and have downloaded a volunteer contact off here (thank you to the person that kindly …

I have been in post as the pre-school manager for just about a year now. I have previously been an assistant in the pre-school for the last 8 years and had some experience of acting deputy / acting manager posts. I have found it increasingly difficuilt to manage staff performance, as some members just seem to have the 'get up and go' missing!....they seem to put more effort into negativity than thinking positively!...(which how you can lack that when you have 30 happy children around you all day is beyond me!)... Does anyone have any 'out of the box' strategies to encourage motivation and performance. Maybe some kind of reward scheme for outstanding performance or…

Hi, I have funding audit on Friday by an external company commissioned by our LEA. Has anyone else experienced anything like this and can give me some pointers on what they might want to discuss. I assume they will tick the parent funding forms back to my claim, but really have no idea how deep they will delve?

Hi I've just had a phonecall from my deputy to say she has to attend a funeral on Tuesday. We do have another employee but she is only working towards her level 3 and doesn't have level 2. They said because of her age she can go straight to level 3. She is very capable (more so than my deputy in some ways) and she is CRB checked, safeguarding and first aid trained. That means there will only be myself (EYP) and my member of staff working towards level 3 on Tuesday. Is this ok in terms of ratio's etc. and would ofsted be ok with it?

Has anyone used the new system yet? I've just googled after receiving an email from Crb-checkonline.co.uk. I presumed it was an official site which it probably is, I even requested information from them! But when I googled DBS there are loads of sites to choose from. Are they set up to make a profit or are they all recognised service providers?

Good evening I'm after some advice...... I have 2 members of staff who we put through the level 3 a year and a half ago. When they'd become qualified the deal was they'd be happy to deputise when the manager was off or training. They have deputised and one of them even ran our summer club for 3 days. However they have told me tonight that they don't want to and wont deputise any longer.....this means I only have one member of staff who's part time that can step up. Thing is when they took on the level 3 it was part of the deal......what to do? Michelle

In light of the program on this evening about safety in nurseries, I am wondering if anyone has done a study on the mistakes, or not, that were made whenever there was a serious injury or death in a childcare setting? The thought of a child being seriously hurt in our care is one of the things that keeps me awake at night (not the only thing, of course!) and I would like to be able to consider our practice in light of these incidents. For example the playhouse involved in the incident described in the program had been altered to stop the roof blowing off but not checked by any standard of safety afterwards. Obviously not good practice but isn't that sort of thing possib…
