I need help. What exactly goes into a business plan? How do you do predict what your income/outgoings are going to be in the next 12 months? If you've been running sucessfully for 40 odd years how do you improve or come up with ways of advertising that you've never tried before?

Hi Everyone I'm doing a research project for my degree and am looking for some willing managers to help me out! I still haven't quite formulated the title yet, but what I'm interested in is how effective is the typical staffing structure of an early years setting, especially the managers role, could we have a more effective structure? Does any other country do things differently from us? I feel that as a manager I'm a 'jack of all trades and master of none' and I'm constantly chasing my tail, never quite getting to where I want to be......so, I wanted to find out if am I alone in this or is the way we are structured having an effect? I have attached an initial ques…

I am considering getting a chip and pin machine as so many parents ask if we have the facility to pay by card, but I have no idea of how to go about it or the costs involved. I have googled it and as always has provided lots of information about the different machines but cannot find any info on the prices, which leads me to think it is expensive! If anyone could give me any approx prices or companies they use i would be really grateful :1b

Aghhhh! Why oh why don't people contact you to let you know that they no longer need a space for their child or want to delay their start. I sent 50 letters out a few weeks ago to tell people about our new nursery open day and to ask them to confirm they needed a place. I made it as easy as possible asking them to email, which i know lots of parents prefer to do, or phone. I had about 20 replies so I have spent the last few days phoning people up, most have said they were coming and it was on their list of things to do, 2 aren't coming now and one's delaying til he's funded. This is all while we are setting up the rooms, doing settling in sessions for babies next week…

I am the leader of a Pre-school in a village hall. We have been the only ones using the village hall in the day time, for as long as I have been there (7 years). However, the community centre is closing, and the village hall is now rapidly becoming a popular venue and the other 2 rooms are starting to be used in the day.I anticipation of this, I have added extra security over the summer holidays to our rooms so no one can enter. I have just found out from the Chair, that we will now have to share the toilets - which are outside our Pre-school rooms, with those using the hall in the mornings. I am not impressed to say the least - and wonder what Ofsted will think of …

I'm not really au fait with this twittering business... but I wondered if it would be a good way to communicate with parents. Just basic general things... comments... like "we really enjoyed playing in our pretend rock pool today! some of us got a bit wet so please check your child's bag for and damp clothes!" or " Wow... look at our brilliant splatter paintings" (with a picture... no children!) Does anybody use twitter in this way... are there pitfalls I should be aware of? Thank-you...in anticipation!

by Guest- 7 replies

Hi Lots of us working on Bank Holiday Monday again - what a dedicated (mad) lot we are. Just going over child protection issues etc - mobile phone policy, photographs etc and just have a quick question for anyone out there. We have one nursery camera and as the owner/manager of a very small nursery, I take the camera home to download and print the photos. Once I have downloaded them from the camera, I delete them from the camera but I do keep the photos filed on my computer. We have very good protection systems at home - firewalls etc but I am just wondering do you all delete the photos from your computers. I update our website with photos for the password p…
