Hi We could do with some advice about a little girl at our setting. She is 2yrs old and has been with us since september. She has no language but makes lots of noises and babbles like you would expect from a baby. She also doesn't acknowledge you when you talk to her or call her name. It's not just at playgroup, mum said she is the same at home. She needs watching all the time else she will do things like paint the walls, climb on windowsills, put things in her mouth. She has no sense of danger and takes no notice of rules or boundaries and the other children are beginning to copy her doing the wrong things. At the moment one of us can be with her all the times becaus…

Morning all. I have had another dreadful nights sleep and decided a little moan on here and an opportunity to gather thoughts from those outside of my family or work space might help lighten my mood! It's a long winded tale and I don't want to air It all publicly right now but here is the situation I find myself in. I am paid at level 4 and I am called the extended school manager. I work in morning (maintained) nursery and I also work and manage afternoon (private) nursery. I also manage breakfast club, lunch club and after school club. Besides the morning nursery sessions the rest of my job is involved with all issues to do with wraparound care. I am a …

Hi I need some help. We are a playgroup. Each year the playgroup buys a gift for the leavers and we take a photo and all sign it to go in their learning journal. This year two members of staff have took it on themselves to send a card to all leavers from themselves and a present to thier key children. I found out from another member of staff who now feels bad cos she has not done anything. We dont do this because of the child protection issues singleing children out and also from a staff point of view feeling that they have to send a gift. I need to update my staff handbook to include this. Any one have one already? many thanks Buttercup

I wonder if any one can help? We pay our term time staff over 12 months with their holiday entitlement included. We don'y pay sick pay so when someone is off sick we just deduct the number of hours off, calulated at their hourly rate of pay. This has never been a problem, but last month was the first time that a member of staff was off for the whole month, so if we deducted her hourly rate she would actually end up owing us money - I really can't get my head around it. I'm hoping that someone 'gets' what I'm talking about.... I son't know how to explain - sorry! It would be helpful to know how anyone else does it. If you are term time and get paid ov…

We may have to make someone redundant this summer? I have been told that we need to have a set of criteria and score everyone against this. Has anyone ever had to do this? and what sort of criteria did you set?

Hi I recently resigned as Manager from a new PVI setting as I was unable to work alongside the owners who continually undermined me, flaunting procedures such as disregarding the CRB requirement for nappy changing and toilet runs, discussed confidential issues with anyone who cared to listen and ignored requests to sort out health and safety matters. Nobody was given a contract or job description, in spite of several requests. Apart from the fact that I was forced to resign for bringing these matters to their attention, they also forced another practitioner to resign without a disciplinary procedure, made another resign by threatening her with written disciplina…

Hi Does anybody have a welcome/new starters letter they'd be willing to share with me to save me reinventing the wheel? We somehow seem to have managed to get by without one for the last few years but I do think it would improve our induction to the setting. Thanking you in anticipation.

Was wondering if anyone has a form they'd like to share that covers all the annual declaration statements for staff re their ongoing suitability. I have one that covers health declaration but I'm more interested in ones that now also include the statements regarding relationship changes and criminal convictions/pending prosecutions for either themselves, their family members or partners and their families. This is per the information sent out from CAYA in August this year saying declarations should verify the personal circumstances of employees have not changed since the previous year. I don't want to re-invent the wheel if someone has such a form in use now but if …

we are looking at ways to increase our profile, and we are having a brainstorming meeting next week to discuss ideas - so far we have come up with * poster blitz the surrounding area -shops, leisure centres, soft play, cafe's, health centres etc *display board in .local gp surgery (showing activities we have done etc) -with information leaflets *set up 'something' at the village fete - not sure what tho ? we'd like to showcase what we do, not nessesarily make money *leaflet drop the village * incentives to current parents -'introduce a new child, get a free session' type thing *articles in local papers any other ideas? - no matter how wild and wacky !
