Hi, I'm a new user so please bear with me if I'm in the wrong place! I run a 24-place nursery and out of school club. We offer breakfast & after school sessions for school children aged up to 11. We also currently offer a nursery morning session 9:15 to 12:15 and an nursery afternoon session 12:15 to 15:15 which includes lunch. Parents of preschool children who want/need full day care just add breakfast and/or after school sessions onto their nursery sessions. We've grown pretty quickly this last year and we've sort of just been adding extra staff sessions in wherever we've needed them without an awful lot of planning. The result now is that I've got a rea…

Hi, I had a run-in with a parent today over late payment of fees. The child has been with us for over a year and there has been an issue over the fees been overdue every few weeks during that time. Anyway, I had the audacity to chase up the fees which were due on Monday (£20.00 which doesn't sound much but it quickly becomes more if you don't chase it, in my experience with this particular parent). She told me I am unprofessional, need to think about my behaviour and that I am abusive and offensive. I was not abusive or offensive but I did tell her she needed to pay the fees, that it does matter even if it's £20.00 and that it was time consuming and annoying to have t…

One of our parents pays our childcare fees using ONLY childcare vouchers (no other payment i.e. cash or cheques) their account is currently in credit and they have requested that we pay them back the amount that they are in credit? they will still have fees to pay until the end of august and will continue to pay using only childcare vouchers (the amount they are required to pay is covered by both of them using vouchers) I am unsure whether we are supposed to pay this money directly back to them or not, as obviously they have not paid tax on the amount and the vouchers are only supposed to be used as childcare fees. I am concerned as I had told them to reduce their payment…

Start Dates And Retainers
by Guest- 7 replies

Just a quick question to other managers of day nurseries. We take a deposit (refundable on starting) to hold a space and the deposit is applicable to that start date only. We have a parent who wants to delay her start date until Jan (due to start Sept). Obviously we would not be able to fill her space in the mean time. Does anyone charge retainers for mid-year admissions? Mum not happy with our response...

Hi all, I need some advise pls if you don't mind. l have a staff who is very good in her work folders up to date etc, but i think she now feels she is bigger than the nursery, She booked 2 half days off, and 2 weeks off, the days were approved and she suddenly changed a half to a full day without seeking permission which i told her off for, as a staff had to take the same day off due to her training leaving us short, she said it was important doctor's appt. she took the day off, and another staff in the same room called in sick, stating she had sickness and diahar. she also called in the next day stating she had sickness and diarhar. and could not come in, which…

Hi, Sorry about the subject matter!!! Not posted in a while but does anyone have a policy on Sickness & Diarrhoea for staff as it's the biggest excuse for time off in our nursery because of the 48 hour rule. How do you deal with this in your setting? We have the policy of 48 hours but wonder if any settings ask for a doctors note or ask staff to provide a sample to prove they are clear of infection etc?? Here's hoping !

Hi! We have a child in our setting who can have quite challenging and disruptive behaviour. She is also very rude verbally - not abusive, just downright rude to adults and children! We have a behaviour system where we use 3 minutes time out and apply it to all children the same and it works well for everyone else. She sometimes achieives this 3 times in a session! The problem we have is that Mum doesn't bring her or fetch her - she comes and goes with another parent who lives near her. It's not like a chidlminder being a fellow EY professional paid to do a job and bring and collect a child: in that situation parents generally agree we discuss any issues necessary wit…
