SO ...about 4 years ago i had a complaint to ofsted from a parent. It was unfounded and quite honestly ridiculous but i spent ages in the inspection talking about it and it caused an enormous headache ...this was just the final straw with this family! (wont go in to details !!) anyway this morning the father walks in and hands me an application form ....i cannot have him back , i would rather resign as would 2 other members of staff! sounds petty but he made our lives a misery. Can i LEGALLY refuse him a place? anyone any ideas???????

Hi al Well had the day from hell today. I took on a Nursery Manager role at the end of last year that I knew would be a challenge but not quite the challenge I have listened to the staff views when I joined as to what they felt needed changing and have tried my hardest to improve the setting, I have made planning a whole lot easier, bought new resources, redesigned the room, making staff well being at the for front and introducing things to make them feel appreciated but........ I am not getting anything back, observations still not being done, journey's not updated, staff sitting at activities not engaging. I have held several staff meetings airing my concerns and b…

Hi I just wondered what your titles are if you are part of the management team? Are you simply the manager or something different. TIA

We are a small PVI setting and both the manager and the deputy manager (myself) have a level 6 - qualified teacher and EYPS/graduate respectively. We don't have any level 3 staff and therefore one of us always has to be there. When we were both ill the setting had to shut for a day. Two of the staff are currently doing level 3 training and should be qualified by September. Are we then able to leave one of them in charge if needed? In the EYFS it says there has to be a named person in charge and the manager thinks they need to have been qualified at level 3 for 2 years. Does anyone know the answer to this?

As we have discussed before on the FSF the business rates re-evaluation that happened last year created significant increases for many non-charity run early years settings. With the increasing costs of minimum/living wage, pensions and consumables many providers are struggling to make ends meet. Following research, the Federation of Small Businesses has published it's report 'Handle with Care' which clearly sets out the impact that government policy is having on early years. They are calling for nurseries to be removed from business rates in an effort to ensure the sustainability of the sector. You can read how this has been reported in the press here: Nursery World …

Hi All This is only my second summer of having a sunny garden. Previous gardens we hardly muster a postage stamp of sunshine, so I don't have much experience of suncream. I have altered the register to confirm applied when children arrive and we apply after lunch for children staying. We had one parent not wanting to put suncream on her child though today. I've not had this before. Our garden is south facing with not much shade (especially now as leaves not grown on apple tree) I am reluctant to stay ok then stay inside as we are very much an outdoor setting. Any ideas. Policy says suncream applied on arrival.

We are getting bored of snack time and ideas of what healthy options apart from fruit and veg we can give the children. We have breadsticks, raisins and crackers but struggle with what else we can offer. Our snack time is at 10am and 2pm ( lunch is at 12pm)

Hi all, First time posting - been lurking a while! Working at a small nursery in Bristol area. We are slowly expanding and looking for staff, we may need to use an agency to allow us time to employ the right people. Would anyone be willing to share their experience of using agencies, how much do you pay, recommendations for any who are good (or indeed any to avoid!) Do you use more than one? Any pitfalls we need to look out for? Apart from building up our own bank staff does anyone have any other method they use to solve their staffing issues. Many thanks in advance.
