At present I have one of our relief staff covering all day Thursday/Friday purely because we are so busy and I'm not getting time out of the ratio for paperwork. I didn't advertise as it was a spur of the minute decision and the staff member is on a temporary contract until end of summer term. However looking towards September I am nearly full and will need an extra member of staff permanently, do I have to advertise or can the relief member of staff just become permanent? She is happy to take the hours on a permanent basis. Kris

Hi all, I've not updated on here for a while so hope you are all well! I would just like to ask what everyone's policy is on Sickness Reporting. In my new Sickness Policy (let me know if you wish to see it) I ask that staff ring in at least 2 hours before your shift is due to start if they are sick and on return to work I ask that they ring before 6pm the day before their return? I also ask that the person themselves rings rather than a partner or sister etc. I have been greeted with some dismay as this means some staff are having to ring in by 6pm (daycare). However, in my defence certain members of staff (previously) have been taking the mick so this …

Hi all I have just started to work in a new nursery in the preschool room. The setting is nice , lovely children and so far nice staff. The last few days some of the children have not wanted to eat their dinner so the cook refused to give them any pudding. I did question why but was told that the owner had made the rule that either the children sat their untill they ate the food or where given no pudding. So today 2 children sat for well over an hour with a bowl of now cold dried up pasta. I was horrifed and got upset to be fair. Could you give me any advice please as I know it goes against everything I have ever been taught and against my own ethics. Those …

Hi everyone I have a few behavioural issues at present that I would appreciate some advice on. This may be long as I have three different issues so sorry in advance. Case 1 I have a 2 years and 6 months. He is the youngest in the group with the next child to him being 2 years and 7 months so not a huge difference. However he is very aggressive in his play and his behaviour towards his peers. He is very difficult to understand verbally and I know this is where some frustrations lie. Now he'll go around hitting and kicking his peers, screaming in there faces and will even use toys to hit them. A lot of his peers are very scared of him because the don't know how …

Hi Sorry to post a few questions tonight We are a pre-school and have children from 2 years until the leave to go to reception. Some can do 2 years with us depending on when they join and there birthdays. Now initially the children were just split between key workers and usually ended up with the adults they were natuarlly drawn too. However we were struggling more and more with small group time. For example in my group alone I have an autistic child, two 4 years olds, three 3 year olds and two 2 year olds - one with speech and language difficulties. Now trying to plan any activity for this group was very very difficult as although I would extend and supp…

I need some help please. Our playleader is due an appraisal which I am to do as chair. As I very rarely see her working I have no idea what to do at the appraisal. Any tips? I dont even know how she does the rest of the staffs. Edited to say, I feel more lost about this because I am level 3 she's 5 so I never feel I should be telling her anything. I've also got a couple of concerns about how the EYFS is being followed and dont know how to bring it up.

Had a phone call this afternoon advising me that Ofsted 'are in the area' - we are 3 months overdue our visit and I think we are ready as we can be - but if anyone can advice what to expect from recent inspections I would be very grateful.

I'm trying to find out from other committee run settings whether or not staff get paid to attend committee meetings or any other meetings which they are required to attend as part of their job. Would anyone be able to let me know what you get, if anything. Thank you Karen
