Staff 'sickness'

I have had a situation today that I am not sure how to handle. A member of staff rang in sick saying that she had earache and that she was going to see her GP. Later in the evening I saw her in the supermarket with her husband doing a shop and then on facebook she told everyone she had been to look at new houses, 10minutes later she rang to say that she would not be in tomorrow as she was on antibiotics and felt really ill. I mentioned that I'd seen her in the supermarket and she said she was collecting her prescription. Should I feel as though I am being taken for a ride or should I just ignore this? and how should I handle it when she comes back to work on thursday?…

Hi all, Just sat here mulling over, how we currently monitor staff attendance and hours actually worked.. like you do on a cold winters eve How do you all do this, we currently fill in a time sheet, with hours worked for the day/week.. but i'm finding some staff are failing to fill them in regualry and they do it and the end of the week..and then from memory! I fill in the time they come in and leave in the register.. so know who is in the building at what times.. etc Was looking at viking magazine and they had a clocking in machine on offer which made me think that maybe this would be a better system. We are a pre-school in our own building.. Wha…

We are in a multi use building .It is 'managed' very poorly by church trustees. We are next to a school but we are privately run and not actually on the school site. We have various problems - lack of cleaning, lack of understanding of need for space to be stimulating to a child , lack of maintenance , temperature in winter brrrrrrrrrr ! The school are aware of the problems we are experiencing and have kindly offered to support us at a meeting with the managing trustees of our building. One of the school governors has been very helpful and supportive and has managed to get a meeting set up to discuss our issues. He has asked us to provide him with evidence of what is cons…

Hello everyone, it's another moan I'm afraid! I am a pre-school leader/supervisor/manager whatever you want to call it, and have been in the job for a year. I have plenty of experience having been a childminder and worked in a children's centre previously, and also been in retail managment for many years before this. Now I expected the job to be hard work at first, especially as I had loads of changes I needed to implement to get us up to scratch in the beginning, and believe me I have worked my socks off. The trouble is it never seems to end! I never reach the end of my 'to do' list, and I go to bed at night thinking of all the things I still need to do. I had a big …

Can you tell me if you let staff just put heating up to whatever they want and damn the expense or do you set it......incident where staff member said it was cold and the heating had gone off, I checked and said its because it's reached set temp (22 degrees) and it would cut back in, some children actually taking jumpers off, I was later told after a lot of whispering that I was 'picking' on them by not letting them turn heating up higher, not sure what's reasonable temp as we were previously in a village hall where heating was included in rent, now in own prem so managing the budget is now more of a responsibility and realising just how much we got away with when renting…

Hi We were told by our improvement advisor that we need to involve parents more with learning journeys and should put comments about what they think of them etc. We have sent out letters asking for contributions to the learning journey's and invited them in to look at them and discuss them but they have all said they don't want to/need to. We were then told by our improvement advisor to set up a parent information table with things like policies etc on, a suggestion box and sheets for them to fill in to go in their child's learning journey about things they have done at home. We are not sure what else we could put on this table and how do we get parents to…

I am alway in delemas (can not spell) I own my setting and had a deputy - we had a little disput and she was demoted - still got on well - she became pregnant and left on maternaty leave and return as a nursery nurse. Since then I have not really found the ideal person to take on her role - I have had acting deputies but do not match her compitance - Her skills are valuable she goes into action when the need arises. However there are times when staff (previous activing deputies) ignor her advice - She is now doing a level 5 managerial course and feel it is time for her to take on the role as deputy however I still have my doubts - please advise If s…

Hi, Its been a while since i posted in here, but im currently getting ready to move to a new setting (non school nursery), and wanted to update the staff contracts to start afresh. We have disclaimers for health, suitable persons: no changes since last CRB that kind of thing, and all staff not at level 3 must be working towards a level 2 or 3 to work here. What i want to add is a disclaimer about reading their EYFS and welfare requirements and keeping up to date. This is because i've learned that even though we provide info, make time for staff to be able to read and make ourselves available for questions, some staff just seem to think they dont need to do this or…
