I was approached by our caretaker this morning who told me we couldn't put 'sanitary wear' down the toilets as there had been a blockage over the half term. Although i totally agree with this, our only other option has been to put them in unlined bins in each toilet (which we have obviously never done!!). Could anyone enlighten me as to how their community village hall settings deal with this issue. Apologies for any offence caused in raising this subject on FSF but thought it may help other settings as well as myself! thank you. dottyp

I'm thinking about building a willow dome or wigwam in a corner of the pre-school garden, as the children really love dens, and we don't have the money for a wooden structure. We often use a pop-up tent which is popular, but the garden is very windy so it isn't always possible. Just wondered if anyone had done anything like this? Is it easy? Any tips? How much maintenance is involved (as this will no doubt fall to me!) I'm quite excited about the idea, but don't wantto bite off more than I can chew!

Hi, We only opened in September and want to get validated so we can get nursery education funding. However, at the moment we are only open for 3 hours on monday, wednesday and friday as we only have children on those days. We have been told we can't get validated until we are open for 15hrs a week. Any advice on what we can do to make up the 15 hours in the bedt way to save money, as we are already running at a loss when open for 9hrs. Thanks

I have had an e-mail from a parent regarding our Christmas activities. They are an Atheist household and so don't celebrate Christmas, and she is anxious to shield her daughter from the onslaught of Christmas. We are planning an activity morning where parents can join their child and join in with lots of Christmas activities, and she wants to know exactly what we are planning to do (actually I don't know myself yet!) Also she wants to miss our evening celebration where children sing songs for the parents (it's not a Nativity). I just wondered if anyone else has come accross this and how you managed it? We will have lots of Christmas activities on offer in the run up …

We've got a bit of a debate going on at the moment as we couldn't possible afford to pay staff to go training during work hours and pay an extra member of staff to cover them. I suggested that it is preferable if a member of staff should be working on a day they are due to go on a course that they swap with another person so we aren't paying out extra money and also the staff member is not losing any money. A member of staff had a training day this week and had covered for another member of staff who was off sick so had made up her hours - well she got her wages and went absolutely ballistic that she hadn't been paid while she was training. I have to point out…

It's a really long story but we've finally changed our status to formalising the legal status of our group and being purely staff led. I emailed ofsted on wednesday to inform them and I received a reply yesterday stating In response to your enquiry, by becoming registered as a company the legal ownership has changed. This will require you to submit a new application and re-register. I saw the message too late to contact them but managed to speak to my EYA last night (10.35pm bless her!) and after many discussions she has never come across having to re-register because of something like this but we are both under the impression that there is a strong possibility w…

We have free flow all the through the session and when it is theri turn to be outside they moan constantly. One even moans about the indoor temperature, we have the thermostat set at 17 so it dosen't get that cold. Please tell me I am not the only one that has staff like this. How do you deal with it? TIA

We have just had a fire safety inspection and been told to follow his instructions or be closed down! these are remove all fabric and soft furninshings, without the appropriate fire safety markings all of which is probably all of our fabric and furnishings, our free flow door strips must be taken down or tied out of the way beacause the door is a final exit, the excessive amounts of paper or card - my creative area - must be thrown out, cut down on display boards and anything hanging from the ceiling. My outside door must be a fire door and so I must take down the fence because I cannot exit into an eclosed space??? If we do all of this we won't be getting good scores …
