Havent really used the site for help before but I hope someone can! We have had a bit of a sudden shake up and now have a new manager and deputy both qualified level 3, one member of staff has just started working towards a level 3 and one unqualified - we are registered for 24 children at any one time and always have four staff on site so we are OK on the adult/child ratio but I dont think we have enough qualified people on site. Help please.

First of all, I have to say this doesn't affect me or the setting (at the moment anyway!) But I just want to know the answer. I had a publication come through about mothers and babies to display for parents. On the last page it has 'maternity rights' it says - 'pregnant women do not have to inform their employers until 15 weeks before due date' (or something very similar - I'm thinking about it now, but have left the booklet at work) HOWEVER, isn't a pregnant person supposed to tell employer as soon as poss (I could understand wanting to wait 12 weeks etc) for health and safety reasons... so they can do risk assessments etc?

We have the opportunity to rent out the pre-school hall for parties etc and i have been approached by a couple of parents asking how much etc. but i am a bit concerned about insurance etc. Does anyone know if we need more insurance if we are hiring to a 3rd party? (PSLA have been very unhelpful and conflicting advice seems to be the name of the game!)

Hi, Have had a situation today where 2 staff members have both said they have seen one of our three year olds, playing out on the paths around his home on his bike. There were no adults in sight watching, and his 'journey' on his bike involved going near a fairly busy road. Any thoughts on the best way to tackle this? They are a family which we have not had any other concerns about, so I was a bit surprised. Don't want to seem heavy handed, but can't believe 3 is old enough to be alone in charge of a bike, near a busy road. What would you do? (Should say, my gut feeling is to do a concern form and speak to parent but looking for other views) T…

We are starting up another pre-school in January and we want to start a manual that would help a new manager understand what we think is important . In it we want to list and describe all procedures and systems. Has anyone done something similar?

Hi all, Is anyone out there using an electronic registering system? I'm wanting to replace our paper ones with a quicker electronic version. What I want to do is have a way of registering children as they arrive by tapping their name (or something) on a touch screen and then tapping their name again when they leave - I want this to log what time they arrive and leave - I would also need to be able to take the pad with me if we had to evacuate the building ... any ideas anyone (or have I just invented an app for the ipad? - if I have just invented it, who might make it for me?) Thanks friends pw x

Hi all; I'm involved in an ongoing dispute with my setting's Improvement Advisor from the LEA. The setting recently underwent a quality review and was judged at a 3c so I've been moved in as interim manager to boost standards. On the previous two meetings she's noticed colouring sheets (out of a colouring book) on the mark making table; and has informed me that these aren't good practice and could affect the quality review. She went on to explain that we're putting expectations onto children, and enforcing an 'end-product' onto them. We merely added the colouring-in sheets because we had a child that LOVES to colour. So to support 'a unique child' and personalis…

Hi everyone....feeling really fed up with changing children constatntly! i have so many this year who are not toilet trained and they are all over 3! with no additional needs i really feel i need to push the parents a little bit to get the ball rolling!! do any of you have a parents advice leaflet or something similar i could copy and use? i tend to find that nobody around here sees their health visitors any longer (we run on a 'bank' sytem) and the HV's dont seem to have time to support toiletting. Thank you in anticipation
