Hi, Can anyone offer me some advice! At present we have a high number of staff absences. For example for Jan alone we have over 17 staff absences. We don't pay staff for their absence, unless its the statutory sick pay of course! I am finding that staff are taking time off for their child being unwell (which I understand we have to accommodate for, within reason) however it puts the setting under strain, as we are low on bank staff as it is and I have to ensure I have the ratio's covered each day. We are now going to introduce a return to work policy, and conduct these if staff are off more that three days in a month. …

I do love this site as always get well rounded general feedback, thoughts, opinions. Another week poses another question. This time staff training. We have two non qualified staff who we said we would put them on a course to study for L2/L3 qualificaiton and a L2 also willing to do L3. Found a L3 course for them which os Ofqual recognised. Great and we have allocated a large budget this year for training. Now, I have another L2 who hasn't expressed interest in the L3 but should we offer the opportunity anyway? We also have two experienced and time served L3s so should we also be considering some extra training for them too? I am probably bein…

Ok bit of an interesting one...hope someone might know the answer I have a family who live on a boat .The boat is currently in dry dock and they have moved in to a flat on a temporary basis. The council have written to them and said they won't currently process their application for a school place because they do not pay council tax. I am assuming this is the same for travelling families....does anyone know how this is dealt with in their authority?

All settings have to registered with the ice, however i have received emails from them and from may 2018 data protection regulations are changing and a 12 step action plan needs organising, this includes an information audit, privacy notices, checking on individual rights, having a data protection officer etc. I have a small setting, 24 children and have a data protection policy. does any one know if this is necessary and or is already implementing it. Do surrey have a template that can be used ?

Hello Everyone, I need to complete a risk assessment on a child coming into our setting after having Grommets. Has anyone done this before and if you have do you have any pointers on what needs to go into the risk assessment, e,g, child not getting their ears wet. I have completed several risk assessments before however this is usually on equipment or a child's height restricting their use of activities. not on medical issues. Any help would be gratefully received, need this done in a few days and i know you are all very helpful on this site Many Thanks Lynne

Question please for those of you that share/hire out your premises. We occasionally hire out our hall on weekends for children's parties etc. Users have access to main hall, kitchen and toilets (Office is locked so no paperwork available) We have a checklist for hirers to sign to say they must not take toys outside, take their own rubbish, hoover and mop floors etc However recently we found some glass under a unit that obviously hasn't been noticed. Our staff do not recall a breakage so we assume it was during a hall hire...it is often easy to miss things like this when cleaning up. Netherthless it got us thinking. Just wondering how you deal with othe…

A supply agency tells me that a person with a secondary qualification is counted as qualified for early years. I said that to my knowledge they are not. They claim that they checked this and had it confirmed, so sent us a secondary teacher. I'm paying much to meet legal requirements, when I could have worked with an able parent or someone else I know without a qualification.
