Does anyone have any good exercises or intray type things that they are willing to pm me, to include in the selection process for a deputy. I'm just thinking that when we recruited an administrator we gave them a short (10 mins) financial problem just to check that they could read accounts and wondered if there was anything similar for deputies/managers. Thanks Caro

i am trying to think of ways to deal with a delicate problem in september ! our new loos are down a bit of a corridor....i want to try to leave the children to be as independent as possible. At the moment the classroom is next to the loos and we can hear if someone calls us (we have 2 children with a medical condition who sometimes need help) ...do any of you have a calling system like a bell to call for staff if children need help.....how does it work?....is there an alternative? any ideas?

Hi all I went to visit a private day Nursery today to meet a child who is attending our Nursery in September. The teacher there gave us documents tracking the child's progress and one document was called Trackers Plus which I never seen before. Does anybody use it at the moment and is it good? Is it used instead of e-profile or as well as? We are using the e-profile at the moment in Nursery but i liked the look of the TRackers plus linking to the development matters. Also what are your children's learning journeys/story books like? I have seen a few examples and I dont know which format to use for the best. One today was full of pictures with the scale points ac…

I don't really know where to start with this one! Buti'm going to make an attempt. I am a leader of a small pre school setting. I have a deputy and one other key worker who work with me on a permanent basis, as well as variuos other casual and volunteer staff. My issue is with my permanent key worker, who does her job and only her job. That's fair enough i hear you say, but we all know that we don't work in an environment in which this really works for anyone. There has been variuos issues harping back to my previuos deputy who rather than support me used her position to stir up trouble between myself and this member of staff. I take some blame for this, but i was…

It looks like our dream of expanding to a day nursery may happen! Incredibly exciting, so now we are in the process of putting together a wish list for what we would like in a brand new purpose built building! Top of our list is air con! What would your must haves be? and if you have built a nursery from scratch what must have things did you do or wish you had done?! thanks!

Hi All First post, here it goes..... we are a pack away setting, pre-school, we employ 6 members of staff all part time. One staff member has a big issue about doing anything outside of working hours if unpaid, attending staff meetings, keeping up to date her learning journeys, craft activities for future sessions, even making playdough! So much so she went to the unions & they told her she doesn't have to do anything outside of normal working hours, so she does not attend weekly planning etc. has half an hour per week to do her learning journeys & is not asked to do anything else for fear of being shouted at! The big issue is appraisals are due this week…

well this coming year will see our local LEA cut back and we all knew it would come. There will be little or no training. No supply cover for some or all training. we are a pack away, non profit making, outstanding pre-school. We have got where we are by good really good training in our area use of good support of KCC staff and excellent networking with other like minded practitioners This is so short sighted, settings will slip backwards and early years will again become the bottom of the agenda when we have been fighting hard to show that this is so crucial for the children's future education We will not be able to pay for supply and therefore training …

Hi everyone We have one confirmed case of hand, foot and mouth and another suspected case possible two. Now been on the hpa site and states that there is no exclusion period!! Should I exclude or allow children to still attend playgroup as long as they are well enough???
