Deputy Roles And Responsibilities?
by Guest- 6 replies

You may know that I have recruited a new deputy after the inherited one has left. Historically this role has included behaviour management, health and safety officer, outings coordinator and planning coordinator. Having been more than a little shaken by the state of these areas since deputy left I am reconsiderring the roles the deputy should be responsible for, after all, many of these areas form the statutory requirements. I know I'm partly to blame for accepting that things had been done and not checking closely enough and I'm now tightening everything up. Would really like to know what additional roles deputys have in other settings?

Inspiring Staff!

I have just started a new job managing a nursery and want to TRY and motivate the team!! I'm looking for that poem about how powerful we are and the difference we can make to a child's day.....i had it in my office in my last job but cant remember it. It's not the 'if a child lives with critisism' poem, its basically about how the practitioner sets the tone of the day and can inspire kids or deflate them etc etc, anyone know it? Also any good ideas on how to motivate staff to turn up??? the sickness levels are awful and as its a LA nursery, there arn't many consequences!

Hi all I have to recruit a level 3 practioner for September, however I've not had to do any recruitment for over 2years so.... What's new? Has anything changed? anything we used to be able to ask, that we now can't? anything that we should ask, that we didn't used to? I used to have to do this every 6 months but we have had a stable team for a few years and this has now rocked the boat, again!

Sleeping Baskets

I've seen pictures of one year olds using wicker sleeping baskets which look a lot like dog beds, and I wondered if anyone had any experience of them? On one hand I like the idea that young children can choose to go into their particular sleeping basket whenever they want to. However, I also recall something about the danger of encouraging young children to crawl into something which resembles a dogs bed, as if they have a dog at home and they do this, potentially a dog may get aggressive if a child invades what they see as 'their space'. I'd be interested to hear any thoughts you may have of this type of sleeping arrangement. Thanks

Hi all I have a problem and would really appreciate some advice. I feel I need to articulate my concerns in order to get them clear in my mind and know what action I need to take. One of my deputies is not pulling her weight, not leading practice in my absence, preferring to passively sit back without very much input at staff meetings, this has been the case since I took over from her as manager 18 months ago. We have had various conversations but I now feel that I need to do something more formal, perhaps explicitly say how her conduct must improve and the consequences if it does not. I'm just not sure what I can do or say by law, could I for example argue tha…

Dealing With Complaints
by Guest- 2 replies

Hi all Been a rough week at school club for me! I have thought it best to complete 2 complaint records. First an email from parent complaining about our booking procedures not being flexible enough for his shift work during the holidays, the fact if his son doesnt use the session he is not abe to get refund for this. Me and the committee who do the bookings have reviewed the procedures and have offered that he can book his sessions once he knows his shifts and that for holidays only he can swap sessions if he does not use them (holiday club is normally alot quieter). Next staff member who is also school cook noticed food hygiene issue (food not being label…

Hi everyone, I wonder if your combined brain power can help me? We have a member of staff whom we all consider to be too unwell to work in childcare. She has severe (I mean really severe) asthma and has been in intensive care on ventilation twice this year. We don't work in the healthiest environment with all the green runny noses and being sneezed at in the face etc etc. She has no sense of smell and very poor hearing too. She sits and does not a lot when she's in, but she's off quite a lot which puts pressure on everyone. Next year our numbers are really high and we'll all have a minimum of 11 children in each key group - we can't 'carry' her again next year. The…
