Hi, This is my first post on here, but I have been reading all of your wonderful advice and am hoping you can help me! I am in the process of opening a playgroup and am looking at staffing options. I will have a maximum of 16 children at any one time (10 3-4yr olds and 6 2yr olds). I was just wondering if I would be in within the ratio's if I had myself as the manager (level 5, foundation degree), a level 3, a teaching assistant working towards nvq level 3 and unqualified member of staff working towards an nvq level 2 qualification? Looking forward to your answers!

Hi I have just been on a course all about writing without tears - an american company that focus on using capital letters first before moving onto lower case. I have always known that teaching capitals hinders a child later on as they need to learn lower case. Do you have ideas on this please

Hello all you knowledgeable ones!!!! Here's the problem.... We are going on a trip on Monday and found out TODAY! that even though we were told that the coach would have 3point seatbelts - they haven't they have only got lapbelts. Therefore some child seats won't be useable with these belts. We have told parents that if they want to use a booster seat/cushion then the child must weight 33lb or more (as this is the minimum weight for these seats) although there is no legal requirement for a car seat on a coach. Now one of the parents has asked us "are you saying it is better for them to travel without a car seat them?" I want to say that yes, it is …

I have just had a call from staff (I'm not in Tuesday afternoons) to say there is a honey bee nest in our giant umbrella. They went to uncover it this afternoon and saw honey bees crawling up inside the folds! We are based in a school and they are trying to find out when pest control can come in, so question is do we open tomorrow!? Obviously as staff have gone to remove cover this has agitated bees somewhat, and as the weather has been great all the children are using the garden and access to and from the pre-school is through the garden. What concerns me is that if a child is stung and we knew the nest is right where the children play it wouldn't look very professiona…

At my setting we are paid monthly for the hours worked, so in months where there has been holiday it can sometimes be a bit thin. The recent rise in the NI threshold will mean that one member does not always pay any NI. My understanding is that if she is on sick leave during a month when no NI was paid the month before there is no entitlement to sick pay (we only get statutory SP). Is this correct or is the entitlment spread over a longer period than just the previous month. Can any one point me to a website to clarify. thanks

Hi All, I am pondering a problem that I have to discuss with my parent committee this week. I am the Leader of a small pre-school , one room, 2.5-5 year olds, 4 staff. I am level 6 (teacher), my deputy is level 3 (NNEB), we have 2 assistants one who is level 6 (experienced teacher) and one who is NVQ2 but about to, hopefully, qualify as EYP. I am being asked to carve out some areas of responsibility for the EYP. Trouble is she is 15 years less experienced than the level 6 teacher but has more 'EYFS' and policy knowledge than the Deputy. My deputy is a lovely people person but not a manager. She doesn't really embrace the role, has no computer skills and does not li…
