How are the changes to school intakes going to affect your settings? We are a pre school running(independently) on a school site. We are open for 10 sessions a week at the moment. Our afternoon session feeds the school that we share a site with(they have no nursery). Our morning is for younger children and children that will feed to other schools. We are going to see a huge dip in our morning numbers come september due to the changes. The schools that have nurseries currently have 3 intakes so their nurseries have been having 3 intakes also. This means we have had a steady flow of children in our morning sessions. However due to the changes these nursery classes will be…

I would really like some help getting my head around the following. We have received a letter from Ofsted saying they have received a complaint about our setting. The complaint is that there have been several incidents of two children bullying, hitting, biting and slapping other children. Now we have had no complaints to us direct. We do have an idea of what the complaint is about and who has made it. We suspect the complaint is regarding 2 children with SEN, both of whom do at times lash out. We always record these incidents and inform both sets of parents. We do our best to avoid these situations but can't always sto the incidents occuring. We had applied …

Hi I know there are lots of posts already on this subject but just looking for some input around setting up a playgroup. I am currently a playgroup manager of a committee run playgroup. Now I know an area where a group of parents are have a petition going for the LEA to open a nursery closer to them, with cuts can't see it happening. The primary school doesn't have a nursery and instead is a 15/20 min bus ride so cost of daily bus fares and also timings for dropping off and picking up siblings etc from the school means a lot of parents are feeling robbed of their free entitlement for their 3 year olds. Now I am up for a challenge and feel it would be a fa…

Hi Everyone Had a parent today inform me that if she gets her 1st choice school her child will be staying with us until Christmas! When I mentioned to mum that from September there was only 1 intake she informed me that because it was a voluntary aided school they could still stagger their intake! Is this true? If so I may have a problem as I am full until September'12 as I thought all our leavers would move on in July and have filled their spaces! Kris

Hi there, just trying to write something up and I can't find the year by which we are supposed to have a lead professional in place by - this is for pre-school. Any thoughts on how we could support the costs of having to employ a degree qualified person when we struggle to pay the current staff? Gosh it's a bit worrying, Spiral :-(

Hello Im looking for a bit of advice please. A member of staff came into work today and smelt very strongly of alcohol. Can you advise how you would deal with this. I had a quick chat with her as it was busy- she said it was last night and she only had a couple! I sent her home and intend on having a chat with her tomorrow- Do you consider this to be a warning? Any advice please x

I've been studying the area of information sharing for my Foundation Degree and I'm a bit confused! I've had no training on CAF and while my supervisor has, I've not really received any feedback so don't really understand it all -and I feel that I should so some personal training might be in order! At the pre-school where I work we have a child who was causing some concern, the health visitor was concerned about daily needs being met, general safety in the house, and how the child was being supported developmentally.... she visited us and observed the child, and we shared information, things improved and the child is happy, developing and usually seems well cared …
