A parent has approached my Deputy at the end of lunch club today, she mentioned that when her husband dropped off this morning whilst waiting for the gate to open another child was using very inappropriate language (the dreaded F word!). Apparently it was used more than once and quite loudly! Mum realises that it was outside of Pre-School (but within school grounds as we are in a primary school), but she felt that we should be aware and that neither her or her husband want their child to be exposed to this language. I fully understand her concerns and have to say if I had been a parent with my child there I probably would have said something!! So do I mention this on …

Hi, the issue of parents complaining about messy play/messy clothes has cropped up again. It's a little bit complicated this time as the parent in question is very unwell and we need to do what we can to support her and her family. What I've suggested is that we put these particular children in old uniform while they're at the setting as a one off. (This is rather than sticking rigidly to our procedures when it is clearly a unique situation.) However, we're wondering how far we should go as a setting to protect children's clothes. Obviously the children wear aprons/tabards for things like messy play and painting, but should we go further than that? What do oth…

I got the phone call at 4.20pm from the chair to tell me .....THEY WANT TO OFFER ME THE MANAGER'S JOB!!!!!. I would like to say a HUGE thank you to Steve and Mundia for their wonderful words of wisdom and support. The Rescue Remedy was the best £5.76 I have every spent, it really helped to calm the nerves which had reach dangerous levels one hour before interview. I start in September as the Manager but for now will continue as a part time supervisor at the setting. I didn't believe the Chair when she rung me and I had to get her to confirm 3 times that she really was offering me the job.(Bet she thought I'm a dippy women) but I just couldn't believe that I got the job ov…

Hi everyone Would really appreciate some input around parent and key worker meetings. We are trying to have them once a term. While we are quite confident that we know our children I feel that we need a tick list/guideance so that we are all discussing similar things, I know not all children progress at the same rate etc. The reason i ask is it seems despite having the rountine on show parents are still not sure of it and a few times this week they have been surprised to find out certain things. Also I have a parent asking me to teach their child to play!!! And another who wants me to make them sit down and read and write. I also have a member of staf…

Start A Blog - It's Great!

If you haven't done so already, I can really recommend starting a blog for your setting. Our parents complained in a recent questionnaire that 'we don't know what our children are doing in prsechool'. So, amongst other approaches, I thought a blog would make perfect sense. I'm writing about the activities the children do each day, what they particularly enjoy, and what they are learning from it. I'm not using any names for confidentiality, but the parents are already loving it and they can also add comments so it is a two way thing. If you are already a weebly user, it is a very simple function on there (on the 'new page' bit, click on 'blog').

Rental Of Premises

I know there have been other posts regarding the cost of hiring premises, but if possible, I would like to dig just a little bit deeper... I may have the possibility of renting a scout hut for the use of a 'pack away' pre school/day nursery (been searching for premises for over a year!). Although it has a great outside space, the hut itself is pretty basic, and would need lots of extra touches during set up each day to make it feel homely. Also, there are only two toilets which I understand means the maximum children I could accommodate each day would be 20. Would anyone be willing to let me know what they pay to rent their premises and also state what sort…

I have recently been contacted by a prospective parent who currently has a subsidised nursery place for her child as she works for the NHS. I wonder if anyone could tell me if they think those places are subsidised by the nursery or by the hospital (NHS)? Thinking it might be a condition applied when the nursery was built close to the hospital. But....could it possibly be that NHS pay subsidies? Just like to know what I'm competing with. Many thanks Honey
