This is my first year in nursery, coming from F2 in a school where I have been used to yearly performance management and appraisals. Now I am becoming aware of 'supervisions' and need clarification on the differences. In my previous experience, monitoring support staff in school, their appraisals would focus on what had gone well that year, how they felt about their role/job and what was going to be an area of development for them in the coming year. ...usually relating to personal journeys or school priorities. So how do supervisions differ? I have looked at some formats on here and find some of the headings confusing as I'm unsure how I should be filling them out ~W…

I have been asked to consider taking a level 1 student for a month, 3 mornings per week. I know the student as she came to our pre-school many years ago! Boy, have I been in this game a long time  I will most likely agree to. We haven't had a level 1 student for many years, I while I shall follow our usual Student induction etc., and I have downloaded a Student Policy and adjusted it for us today, anyone offer any insights ? Anyone had a level 1 student lately. What do you actually get them to help with? She is or is about to be 17 and comes with a DBS from the College. She wont be alone with the children at any time, she does have some physical dif…

Hi All After working in an industry that has had so much change over the past decade, I can't believe that practitioners still find it a problem to reflect and move on. Do other Managers still find it a problem. I'm not talking about any major changes, just perhaps changing apple to oranges, a declutter and tidy, a flexible approach to planning, introducing Tapestry! Over the years I have tried the hard line, softly softly but nothing works. I have written essays on it and even the lecturers comments were 'some people can't accept change' Any ideas would be appreciated.

Dear All, I hope your all well. I have two rooms at my nursery and in 1 room a couple of staff have complained to me saying other staff are taking more than their 1 hour lunch break (for example, leaving at 12.30pm and returning at 1.40pm). Should I send a memo to all staff reminding them that lunch breaks are 1hr and if staff continue to take longer tighter measures will be put into place (like signing in/out when they go on lunch) - or should I put that system into place? Thanks

I know this has been answered before but I just wanted clarification that it is still the same and hadn't changed and I had missed it! 2 members of staff whose DBS's were done 4 and 5 years ago are mithering about needing a new one - I don't think they do as there is nothing in writing (that I can see) to say they have to have a new one. I get them to fill in a staff suitability form at every supervision so 3 times a year. One of them will also be leaving in the very near future and I know my Chair will not be too happy spending the money on hers for her to sign up to the update service and leave us very shortly. We have had major money issues this last year but are n…

Hi all you lovely and knowledgeable people : ) After many years of working with children I have been offered the chance to set up a new nursery in an old children's centre. I am very excited but there's so much to learn! I am currently thinking about staffing; we will have up to 24 children, incl. up to eight 2 year olds. We will be open from 8am-6pm (that was a council requirement). I am hoping to have 3 L3+ key people (incl. myself) and up to 3 assistants. I am getting a headache trying to work out staff rotas, I was hoping to stick with the CC 37.5/week and have early and late shifts to cover setting up and tidy up. I also want to make sure that keypeople are ther…

I'm wondering what responsibilities we have to assist parents with disabilities get their children into nursery/school? I've been observing a situation at the school I drop off at. For the past two years the little boy has been picked up from, and dropped back to the the Mother's car by the Teaching Assistant. Now the second child has started nursery and the parent has been told that it's too difficult to keep that up and the children (only just three and five) will be released from the door as long as a 'line of sight is maintained between the parent (who uses crutches to move to the car tailgate), and the teacher, and in reverse in the morning. I know other schools i…
