Hi, there's a little girl who has down's syndrome who is likely to be joining our setting in the near future. We want to do our very best to support her, but we don't have much expertise. Obviously we will be liaising with our early years team to get their advice. Does anyone have any experience of children with this and could give us some ideas? We have a member of staff keen on makaton, so that will help with her communication needs. At the moment she is not yet walking, I assume she is likely to be delayed with that, so access to the outdoors might be tricky. How could we help her access that? Also we have a stage area that could be quite dangerous for her…

Wonder if anyone can help I've just been contacted by a company called Carlisle Security who claim to offer CCTV installations subsidised by the government through crime prevention and the local police. Just wondered if anyone had heard of this scheme or come across the company? There sometimes seem to be so many scams out there and people trying to sell us things, that I thought I'd ask you all before spending too much time on it. On the one hand we could benefit from CCTV to protect ourselves with a huge increase in nursery break ins in our area, but on the other hand, I know we can't afford it if this 'subsidy' turns out to be just a sales pitch Tha…

If anyone works in Portsmouth can you tell me what happens with funding if a child leaves your setting part way through the term? In my LA the funding follows the child at any time in the term but I know it's not always the same. Thanks

just received a letter from GCC - now all 'free for 3+4's funding forms (still cant get used to saying that NEG was much easier lol!) are going to be available online only. a reminder will be sent to the email address given to us at the ICT training day. they are also hoping we will also scan all the forms and email them back, they are planning on ' encouraging all settings to do this eventually'. as we dont have internet connection in our setting this is another thing i have to try to remember to do at home. im going to have to print all the forms at home -as its going to be easier than putting on a flash stick and taking it to the setting. then im going to have …

Peanuts For Bird Feeders?
by Guest- 11 replies

Dear all, I just wondered what other settings do with regard to bird food. I recently found out that we keep a tin of peanuts in the setting and also have them in the bird feeders in our garden. We have actually had a child who we were told has a mild (?) nut allergy. Luckily the child has left and there has been no harm. But seeing that allergies are not always found out about early, would it not be wiser to avoid having them at the setting? Any advice gratefully received. x Titania

Hello Our reading area at present is just a box with compartments for books and a seat at one end which we sit on when reading stories. We would like to make this area more inviting, but money is hard to find, as ever. I would just like to know what others have in their reading areas, for a bit of inspiration. Photos would be lovely too!! I would like beanbags or comfortable seating of some sort, and a better way of displaying the books. Any ideas would be appreciated! Thank you...

Hi all Just thought i would share this with you. The committee that i am on for OOSC is using a free online too to do our parent questionnaire. It is done by surveymonkey.com and it allows you to have 10 questions. You then give parents a link to your survey and they do it online and it works all the percentages etc out for you. This is free but then you have the option to pay for extra questions, being able to produce charts and graphs etc. Im just copying the answers out into my own document. We also are putting paper copies out for those without internet and it gives me the facility to manually enter the results from those. Im also doing one for the school club k…
