can i ask, when you close for holidays (christmas, easter, summer etc) do you pay your staff during their last week of work -or do you keep the payroll pattern rolling ? ie -we usually get paid at the end of the month (well supposed to - but thats a whole different story !!) would your staff get their wages / payslips on their last day of work, or would you pay them at the end of December ?

Under my new job role I have been handed the responsibility of looking after all students who come to our Early Years Centre. There is a very loose system in place which I am looking to restructure, just wondered if anyone has any tips or words of advice before I steam ahead! So far, thinking about: * tour/introduction * location of toilets/staff room etc * fire escapes/drills * dress code * policies Any ideas or information about how you all do this would be great! Nursery Premises

Can you help with suggestions? After redundancy in December 2009, a colleague/friend and I have been searching for premises in which to run our own nursery or pre-school, my friend has an early years BA and I am on second year of my foundation degree. Having done agency work since then, we have both become a little disallusioned, and dread having to work for someone whose ethos and vision is widely different to ours. We've contacted two local borough EY business support teams, searched on the internet, phoned local churches and sports clubs. We got very close to a fantastic site sharing premises with an Adventure playground, but we were 'outbid' by an exi…

Can anyone confirm if this is ok please? We have a couple of children at my setting who use all their funding at another setting. Up to now we have just charged the same fee as unfunded children (£16 for 6 hour session) but I've decided to now charge at the funded rate as we are losing out (funded is £21.09 for the same session) Is this allowed? we are a voluntary run pre-school and need to "earn" money where possible to pay wages, get new toys etc etc (it's not for profit) Hope some of that makes sense.......

Drunken Behaviour Procedure

We had nice Ofsted lady in last week to have a look at our new room. She also went through a set of questions with us and made a couple of suggestions about things. One was to make sure Ofsted's address is in the policies, not just a phone number. The other was that we need a written procedure for dealing with parents or staff that turn up not sober (in whatever way). Has anybody got one of these? She said this is a favourite topic for inspectors at the moment.

Staff Repaying Training Costs
by Guest- 17 replies

Hi, I know it has previously been mentioned on here that in some settings staff are asked to repay training costs if they leave the setting within a certain amount of time. What I need to know is how you communicate this to staff - is it in their contracts, or in the handbook, and how it works, i.e. is it a percentage per year, etc? I'm thinking particularly of things like 1st Aid that a staff member can take to another setting. The reason I ask is that we booked a staff member onto some statutory training, she is now leaving, but it was too late to cancel the training. Luckily she has said that for good will she will cover the cost, but otherwise we would ha…

the new commitee took over in sept, all the staff had reservations with the new commitee members -mainly due to the fact that none of them had children in the setting -i tried to dispel any fears they had -told them to give them a chance, etc........well, now i have egg on my face. the new commitee are totally useless, we havent seen the chairperson for nearly 4 weeks, despite us having a visit from ofsted -we requested a meeting nearly 3 weeks ago, but so far have heard nothing back. the treasurer has messed up the staffs wages for 2 months, no-one received a payslip last month, so we have no idea if our pay is correct or not. i believe their is a conflict of intere…

Crb Checks
by Guest- 22 replies

Hi all Please, please tell me we are not the only ones to do this?! Do you hire new staff and then apply for CRB check? Had a heated discussion with someone tonight. She was adamant that you could not take somoeone on unless they had a CRB for the setting (she works for council childrens residential). I said this just was not feasible for OOSC and pre-schools given that some CRBs were taking 3 months to come through. We would have to shut whilst we wait! She was shocked at the thought we had staff who were with the children without CRB. I said they were never left alone with the children to which she replied that did not matter as you did not need to be alone…
