Just wanted to see if anyone was increasing wages from September and by what percentage? I have two staff on minimum wage(since it went up in April) so looking to increase that but then it impacts on maintaining the differential for other more qualified staff. Trying to find some figures for average wage increases for nursery staff. 3.5% seems to be national average (Daily Telegraph) but my husband who is a train driver only got 2%. Any help please.

I need to get a new DBS done for a new menber of staff who will be joining, I contacted capita but they said as I only need 1, and I only employ 5, I would need to use someone else, can any of you recommend somewhere that does them? Is it simple?! And do I as employer do it or do I ask the new member of staff to directly do it herself? Inherited the other staff and haven't had to do this myself yet! Thanks in advance!

Hi Just wondering if you can clarify. I have 3 members of team who are level 6 qualified but have always counted them in as 1:8 (3 & 4 year olds). But if I were to count them as 1:13 what happens if they are off sick or out training? Do I need to replace with another level 6? Because if they were covered by a level 3 I would not be within ratio? Sorry if it is a silly question.

We have a member of staff who is hearing impaired, so needs to attend medical appointments several times a year. We generally ask staff to make appointments before/after sessions, or take time off without pay (or swap a shift). However, the new staff member requires the whole day, and cannot "negotiate" appointments. Is anyone else in a similar position, and how do you manage this? I am thinking about the legislation regarding Disability Discrimination. Many thanks.

Hi Lovely People I am feeling a little down at the moment and am in need of severe cheering up. It has been a bit of a hard year and I am feeling a little "deskilled" by some of the challenges. So a little more than cheering up I need to be reminded why I am good at this job. Now I know you do not know me well but I challenge you to give me top ten characteristics of being a good manager they could be labels I can reattach to myself and build myself up a bit. Thanking You Muchly in advance.

Just wondering if you share details of funding with your parents? I never have, although it is no secret on this forum what I think about the pittance that we are paid, I always kept my thoughts to myself with regard to parents (really it's not their problem) This week has been quite trying (not the children they are lovely :1b ) - but management/paperwork issues - I now have to register for 30 hours even though I only provide 15 - this because a couple of children also attend a childminder....... Was reflecting on how much work is continually being piled on us....... Kent is raising funding by 5p per child per hour in September which brings us up to the g…

Hi all, Just interested in what's happening with sun cream application. Do you wash hands between children? Glove up, and change gloves or not between children? Does it depend on the children's skin, or the brand of sun cream? Does anyone have policies for sun cream application or does it fall under general skin cream application? Jacq

Hi Has anybody had a member of staff undertake the Employment based Early Years Teacher training? I have someone who wants to do it and has probably got a place this September but I can't really find any information about how the funding available to us works? While I support her, I'm quite concerned about how, in a small setting with a small team, we manage her being in uni and away on placement. She will have to be away for a 0 -2 years placement for about half a term, and on another Year 1 for two weeks, along with other days at uni. Any words of advice or support from someone who's been through it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi I've only started at my current setting after Easter this year. Its term time only. There are 3 staff plus me. They used to be paid weekly until November 2016 when they moved to monthly pay. The holiday pay being included in the monthy amount. The staff have now told me that they want their holiday pay reconciled to included all extra hours done over the year ie 1/2 shopping, hour staff meeting. Do other people do this? One lady has done 4 x 1/2 hour shopping over the year? How would I work it out based on 4 weeks holiday pay. Thank you

Having recently taken over a term time packaway preschool i have discovered the SEN work is being done on the SENCOs own laptop at work and at home. I am somewhat concerned about this from a safegaurding and security point of view and wondered what other peoples views on this are as I just feel this is very wrong. does anybody have a policy on working from home they could share.
