Hi folks - hope someone can share their expert knowledge of these things.... I had a prospective parent come into pre-school yesterday with a child who turned 3 in January. The child currently attends a maintained nursery class at another local school, but she has been told that they don't have any free spaces available and so, while the child attends the same sessions as the nursery children and occupies the same space she is known as a 'day care child' and mum is charged for her sessions. This sounds very odd to me and I didn't think we were allowed to charge for sessions within the 5 session entitlement. Any thoughts? We are in Oxfordshire if that make…

Rent

Hi all I guess this has been covered before but I couldn't find anything using the search function so I'm posting a fresh thread. I'm interested to know how much you pay in rent. We are a committe run setting and we are lucky enough to have our own bulding and grounds leased from the council on a peppercorn rent (we do pay our own maintenance and utiltites though). We are also lucky (well through lots of hard work really) to have secured funding for a new building. But, when we break up for the summer we wont be back on our site until Easter 2011 while we wait for the demolition of our building and the new build to be complete. We have secured a tempora…

Staff Wearing Jewellery

Hi, I need some back up on this one which is why I am on here! I gave out a staff handbook just before half term, based largely on the PSLA one that was recommended by you lovely people (it was perfect, thanks!) I made a couple of small changes but mainly left it the same, as presumably it reflects best practice. Admittedly I didn't read every single word but I did skim through and it all looked reasonable to me. Well, guess what, one member of staff has already complained about the mobile phone policy and the jewellery bit. I had put that mobiles should be left in kitchen (staff only area) switched off. Does that sound reasonable or should I let them leave…

I have a parent that thinks her child is an angel, who does not bite, but shares, or smack other children. She always comes to the nursery complaining that her child is been smacked by other children, and she wants a stop to it. We told her that children would always fight and make up and we are always them to intervene when necessary, but she would not hear of it. She approached a child that was named by her child, and told her you must not push or smack ......... it is not nice. A child has now bitten her child, we informed her and told her to sign the incident book, she said no, she wants the name of the child, we obviously cannot give due to confidentialty, now she w…

Employment Help Please
by Guest- 5 replies

Hi everyone, I need another member of staff to work with the children and have looked at the 'suitable person criteria' in the EYFS Document for clarification. What I want to know do you all employ only qualified staff in Pre-schools now? I was wondering if I can still take on an unqualified person to train up over time. The new member of staff would be included in ratios.
