Hi, Need to let off some steam and get some advice please Staff in my setting currently have a 15 minute AM break, 30 minute lunch and a 15 minute PM break. Because of several issues that have cropped up I now want all staff to take 1 hour for lunch. Staff are paid for their breaks unless they go off site. What do other settings do? I am changing this because: * Some staff are taking the michael coming off their breaks late, which makes others late. This results in breaks and dinners taking over the whole day... * The Key Person is available during the start/end of day and not on break... - My Contract of Employment states 'your norma…

You may remember that I resigned as Manager of our pre-school in January and gave 2 terms notice as I suspected applicants would be hard to come by. I was right. By last thursday we were having an EGM to close the setting but by Friday morning one of the staff had applied and been appointed.... 11th hour or what??? Anyway, I'm unclear what I need to do re Ofsted as she's an existing employee with crb etc. Does she have to fill in an EY2. I will ring Ofsted on Tuesday but thought you might know the answer!

One of our children who suffers from recurrent ear infections and is awaiting referral to ENT has contracted Hand, Foot and Mouth. Does anyone have a standard letter that you send to parents as we have never had this arise before? Any help appreciated x

Safety Out Of The Setting

we have concerns for a child in our care and have made a referral. This has been difficult within itself, however, there are further concers for the safety of one of the staff as the family are known to be agressive and violent, yet live closely to the family. What can the preschool do to protect it's staff? Just wondering if anyone else has had experience of such a difficult situation. Spiral.

New Baby Care Unit

Hi Everyone I am in the process of relocating my current pre-school to a new location which will involve full daycare instead of sessional and a baby unit. Am very exited but the baby unit is challenging as I have never worked in or run one before. Was hoping people would be willing to share expereinces with me? Have so many questions but here are the most pressing ones! 1. At the moment I can`t get my head around staffing. Am planning on opening 8-6. How do others work out staff rotas/shifts? 2. Do you all use wooden cots or has anyone tried travel cots - space will be at a premium for me? 3. Do you keep to a strict routine in line with nursery running or…

Scarlet Fever

Hi, A child in our Pre-school has this and Ofsted have told us to take advice from the local hospital who say we have to close for 2 days and disinfect everything. This is the second time we have had to do this in the last 6 months-same child! To me, this seems a bit extreme because the child was at Preschool for 2 days spreading her germs and touching everything so the damage has probably already been done. Parents are not happy about a two day closure and some think they should be given a refund but we will still need to pay the staff for the 2 days whilst they disinfect. Any advice?

Through a recent parent questionnaire, it appears that our parents feel they do not have enough information fed back as to their children's learning and progress (we are in a village hall pack away setting) although all parents are aware they can talk to their key person anytime with our 'open' policy. Could anyone tell me how they manage to share child progress with parents ie. open mornings, planned meetings, appointments etc. in a more formal way. thankyou. dottyp

Hi everyone Two staff at my setting are doing their NVQ3 training at the moment. They started in September and are due to finish next month. I expressed at concern a couple of months ago that the training has been too quick and they are not ready. Along with the college we agreed the students should attend the fortnightly non compulsary lecturers to support their learning. They have not attended. The college have now suggested that they have a two month break now to gain experience and then resume. They are not happy about this. I feel that they are becoming good practitioners but do not have the confidence / experience to lead in my absence. We …

Babies And Toddlers Together?
by Guest- 11 replies

Is this possible? We really don't have enough toddlers and babies to warrant seperate rooms at the minute, and I just wondered how this could work if we combine them. We would use the toddler room as the base room as it is bigger, would the lower ratio 1:3 be the one we adhered to?
