Hi, I have a slightly different problem to Shelia's. We are a small, new pre-school setting, only 3 staff -myself (leader) my deputy and an assistant who is doing EYP. My deputy is THE MOST lovely person very good with the children, parents and other adults. She has come back to work environment after 10 years of bringing up own children. My problem is that she has a very busy home life and has no time to do any work at home. She is weeks behind with her Learning diaries and uses lots of avoidance tactics when it comes to doing written work. She is intelligent but slightly dyslexic so lacks confidence about her spelling. She has no computer skills. A lot of our …

Employee Wants Demotion!

This is a bit of an unusual one. I employed a Room Leader in October of last year. The job was a challenging one as the room is busy and, as we recognised, some of the staff did need further training and modelling of best practice. The Room leader came in and has turned the room around and done everything that I wanted her to do. However, she has now started to get some financial help off the government towards her rent etc., and has now announced that she wants a demotion as she feels she can't do the job anymore. Given that all the staff have improved 100%, that the room is running really well and the children are having really positive experiences, I ca…

I'm in the process of inviting new starters after Easter in for taster sessions. I'd like to have an informal meeting with their parents at the same time but my mind has gone completely blank about which policies & other documents are to be discussed with them at this stage - I know it's Safeguarding but can anyone help with the rest? I don't want to overdo it & see them disappearing under a load of papers! Your help would be much appreciated.

We employ a cook for 6 hours a day - she has responsibilty for the organisation and preparation of the food for the children (about 40) and all the food hygiene and food safety stuff as well. Up till now we have ordered in the food but need to cut costs as like everyone we are on a tight budget. I have asked her to do the shopping for the Kitchen locally - we are within minutes of supermarkets and a good local greengrocer, and hold her own budget, she has time as I know she spends at least an hour each day looking for things to do. She has thrown a wobbler and states it's not her job, and she doesn't have time, although she has the 'any other duties' in her job spec. Any …

I am wondering if anyone can tell me what sort of things need to be included in a report for an Initial Child Protection Conference? Its many years (about 20 years) since I last attended one of these meetings and I would like to get it right. I am thinking that it is things like are the children clean and appropriately dressed; are they hungry at nursery; what is their self esteem like; are they witdrawn/any changes of behaviour; any injuries noted. A bit on how the parents interact with children when they drop off/pick up, if they are involved in nursery events, contribute to learning journals etc. I'm sure there are obvious things I have missed off…

Has any one formed a fire risk assessment that they would be willing to share so that I can get an idea of what I need to cover. I am planning to send 2 staff members of the course but it will not be until after Easter and OFsted are due! Please can you help
