Hi all We are being forced out of our village hall where we currently hold our pre-school session. Long story, but we have considered so many different venues in our locality to be able to continue to provide preschool education for local people, and we just cant find anywhere. That is until the local pub landlady said she would be willing for us to use her funtion room, which isnt used much in the daytime. We have sent out questionnaires to parents to get their views and majority are happy. Some are concerned about the image of the pre-school being in a pub, others are concerned that the pub is at the side of a very busy A road. Any body else out there run fr…

We have had a company visit our setting offering a service that provides us with up to date policies, takes you through step by step recruitment and general paper work: apprasails, holidays, etc. Does anyone use a company like this? My collagues think it is a good idea but I have my concerns. The company uses ict program to track management issues. Would love to hear your views!

Hi guys, Need a bit of advice on two areas. I want to be fair to the staff whilst trying to ensure that I keep the children and other staff happy. Issue 1. Nappy Changing. What are your policies and risk assessment on pregnant staff changing nappies. As soon as someone is pregnant at nursery they immediatley say they can't lift and can't change nappies. I advise them that they can and that we will risk assess as their pregnancy progresses and that obviously I wouldn't expect them to lift a Pre-School child, but unless their doctor has advised them differently they can lift babies and lighter toddlers or do nappies on the floor if they so wish. I also advise …

Super Numerary Manager

Can I ask how many settings (particularly committee run pre-schools) have their manager as super numerary, not included in the ratios, for some or all of the time? If only some of the time, how many hours roughly in a week does s/he have managerial time? Is this in the office or still in the room? Do you also have an administrator (paid or voluntary) to deal with other stuff like admissions, invoices and filing? And does your deputy manager also have any out of ratios paid time for management? Thanks. (Sorry, I only ever seem to come on the forum with a whole list of questions!) and PS - if there is already a thread on basically this subject, please can you p…

I currently manage a committee run setting and once again we are looking for a new chair and treasurer. It is the same struggle every 2 years and I seem to spend a lot of time cajoaling people into taking on the role. A colleague has approached me with the suggestion that we change from committee led to owing it between us but still run as a charity? - Has anyone done this and is it a nightmare but worth it in the end or is it a fairly simple procedure? I would appreciate any suggestions where I can go for formal advice but if any of you have done this your top tips would be gratefully received. We currently run from a Parish Hall but are looking to purchase our own b…

A call to all you who might be teachers with a ceriticate in education, pre 1980. Has anyone else tried to input an old cert ed into the CDWC audit tool. This qual was achieved by a colleague many years ago, who we have always treated as having QTS, but can't find her qual on the CDWC site. She was cleared to do EYPS should she so wish (but didn't) which surely means that her qual is still recognised by the CDWC.....or does it? Any help greatfully recieved!!

Age Of Young People Collecting From Pre-school

Hope someone can help. I know that I have seen this discussed before but I can't find it. The other week when I was off, one of our parents sent her young brother to pick up her son. First of all she had not previously informed the group that he was collecting his nephew and the staff seemed to think that this lad was only about 12/13. He was collecting the child by himself and was walking him home. There was no known adult waiting outside the gate to accompany him. Is there stated anywhere that a young person collecting a child needs to be over a designated age? Thanks, Mary

Staff Suitability

I wonder if someone could help me with a form. I was looking through the new breakdown of Ofsted comments on the home page. I think we are ok on most things but it did give me a few ideas, most of which probably involve a new form - doesn't everything!! One of the things was regularly checking that staff : "declare all matters which may affect their suitability to work with children and evolve systems to assure this" Can you tell me how you do this and/or what questions should you be asking about this? Thank you in advance. Jane x
