I received a call this morning from a father asking if his child had been involved in any incidents on Friday as they had severe bruising on their arm!! I assured him that I was unaware of any incidents, (checked with staff, checked accident book etc!!) The parents of this child have split up and the father hasn't seen the children for 3 weeks, when mum dropped the child in she asked "has HE rang you then!!) she seems to think the child has fallen over and bruised their arm. The father has asked if I could try and find out from the child how the bruises have happened. I have seen them (child was washing their hands and rolled sleeves up) when I commented on the bruises t…

Nursery Class Structure

Dear all, Next year our school is splitting our mixed age groups of 3-5's to 3-4's and 4-5's. I am wondering how people who teach 3-4 year olds in a school have their class time tabled or set up. We are an International school and have recently changed our curriculum to an EYFS play based system. I am not in a position to visit other play based systems that are teaching according to the EYFS statutory framework. My background is also not in a play based system. The 3-4 year olds day starts at 8.30 and finished at 3.30. Thanks,

Pay Scales

Hi, Does anyone have examples of pay scales that show incremental as well as inflationary increases. We have unqualified, level 2, level 3 etc but I would like to expand and overlap them somewhat to allow for flexibility e.g. a level 2 with years of experience on similar pay scale as a level 3 with no experience. Thanks

Please Help

Hello - sorry to be a pain- but desperately need an issue ironing out ASAP. We regard ourselves as a 'sessional' pre school as we open for 2.5 hours per session 5 mornings and 2 afternoons per week - children do not stay for lunch. I believed under the old Standards we could remain sessional as long as we didn't open continuously for more than 4 hours in one day. If we did open for more than four hours in one day we would be classed as full daycare. I am really trying to find where in the EYFS it states that this is still the case or is it not any more? If so why are there different Ofsted registration fees for 'sessional' and full daycare'. I have an issue 'bubbling…

Question Regarding Dismissal
by Guest- 9 replies

hi all. I was just sitting down to write a letter to a staff member who I decided to give a week's notice to (per the contract). She started in September, had regular probation review meetings, probation was extended for a month to give her one last chance, but it just isn't working out and so I have decided to let her go. My question is, how should I word the letter - has anyone done this before? - does she have a right to appeal the decision and if so within what time limit? I admit to being lazy and asking on here before going on the ACAS website, but I know so many people here have a huge amount of experience and I'm sure someone will know! many thanks xx

Possible Expansion!
by Guest- 3 replies

Due to an unfortunate event at another setting locally I might be looking at expansion as parents scrabble for a place for their child. We have already decided that our first priority is our current children and families, with the close second being our staff. Then comes the children who are being displaced and their families, the oldest ones first. We have some spare capacity in our current set up and have negotiated a theoretical extension to our hours so we could run some afternoon sessions. My to do list for this week includes checking with Ofsted and the insurance company that we are within our current registration and cover to do what we plan, and I have a perso…

We have a staff shortage on a wednesday and i cant see anyone wanting a 1 hour a week job! So i was just wondering what do you do? And who's right The other staff all flipped yesterday (my …

Hi all has anyone had any good training in Leadership in Nursery (school ) or Early years. By default I have found myself leading in nursery and I am struggling to get a grasp of what it means and to appreciate what the role entails. I have got a job description but I am at the stage where I really need some proper training in this area in order to make myself and the subsequently the team more effective. I would ideally want a course longer than a day or two, something to get my teeth into! Has anyone done such a course or know where I could find out more? Many thanks Apple

Sorry to bother you all but I just want to check out a situation....I have a dilemma tomorrow with two members of staff phoning in sick tonight! I have been able to ring my supply list of relief staff drawing blanks with the two regular peeps but have managed to arrange cover using three other people, I for the morning, 1 for the afternoon and 1 for all day....now can I just check with someone in the now - how do I stand CRB wise or qualification wise....I am on the one hand jubliant that after phone calls and hassle I can cover the day but now doubting the ethical consideration of what I have arranged....? Two of the supply ladies are qualified teachers and one is a …
